For sci-fi, I would say Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. Make sure to check the book chronology before reading and throw in his other novels like Caves of Steel and Nemesis, as they are kind of related/complementary.

After reading the posts I'll get Angels & Demons and Anne Rice books...

I'm actually reading the Foundation books at the moment (I'm only on the second one, haven't got the time to read nowadays). They're really good, I just wonder why I had not got around to reading them earlier.

this one is a book a little bit like Mushashi ..(samurai things)... but it has humor

Title: cloud of sparrows
author: Takashi Matsuoka
desc: a little romantic...not too much

speaking of MUSASHI : this one is good too, but I prefer the real one that still in 7 edition, not the edition that becomes 1 book (the new edition)

There is only one book before Da Vinci Code and that was Angels and Demons, and I recommend reading it for sure. He does have two other books though, but they have different characters.

Also Dune is a great great book. Very good storytelling and very creative. He builds a whole world from scratch including relgions and everything. The best part is he keeps the story going so even though thier are alot of details and stuff it doens't get boring.

Also has a dictionary and appendix that defines alot of the words and the culture.

So far, the top favorable or so books on my list include:

*Asimov's Foundation Trilogy

*Neil Stevenson's Cryptonomicon, Snowcrash, Quicksilver (Baroque Cycle)

*OSC's Ender's Game (the rest of his work is kinda bland)

*Weis & Hickman's Dragonlance novels (All of them) Chronicles & Legends being the first to start off with.

*Raymond E. Feist's work (all of them), starting with Magician

*JR Tolkien: (all of 'em)

generally I find that if I've read one book by an author, the rest of their work will be satisfying as well. The exception would be Mr. Card's work because after Ender's Game, the rest of the franchise isn't quite the same. I'm not a fan of Robert Jordon or Mr. Eddings, nor Terry Brooks. Their work just isn't enjoyable to me. :(

I can't stand the books because his research done in his other books like "Digital Fortress" leave a bad taste in my mouth. It is as if he researches just enough to make something up, but I can run circles around some of his 'facts' that he presents that basically ruins the story for me. The least he could do is consult some technologist before making shit up.

Dick Fransis: Very interesting detective.
Ursula LeGuinn: First Three books on Earthsea, very serious fantasy
Rafael Sabatini: "Chronics and Odessy of Capitan Blood" Very good Pirate novel
Alexander Duma: "Count of Monte Cristo" (damn Hollywood for such a bad movie adaptation)
JJR Tolkien: LotR, Hobbit (not fan enough to read "Silmarillion" and the rest)
Mary Stwart: her Merlin saga "Hollow Hills"
Stanislaw Lem: "Stories of Capitan Pirks" - old style SciFi.
Sergey Lukyanenko: "Labirynth of Reflections" very nice computer baced scifi. I swear, Matrix and Hack Sign stole from it.
Maria Semenova: "Volkodav", "Valkirie" very nice medeval fiction.

agree with the first half, ender's game was the only one i really enjoyed reading the first. I can understand RJ cause he can be drawn out and get boring/frustrating. some of the characters (namely the females no offense) are a littel to developed...on the annoying side. and i have gotten tired of Eddings before. but i still enjoy them

thats why i choose to no longer read a lot of Eddings in a row, the first time i did that i had to stop reading because by the last book i just felt overwhelmed by the same stuff.

My favorite book is Small Gods by Terry Pratchett. Hilarious, part of his discworld series. I keep it on my nightstand because I re-read it so much, unlike most of my other books that are collecting dust on my bookshelf...
Other than that one nothing comes to mind except a bunch of educational non fiction books that I'm sure no one else cares about...

Both fantasy medievel and straight up medievel are perfect cause i like both genres.

Libax: . I loved piers anthonys works. His xanth series was really crazy for me. I remeber picking up the first book " a spell for chameleon" in the 7th grade. I still go pick up a new copy everyonce in a while. Cause tehres a lot of books in the series. I think youll like it too. Its a fantasy series. But it has everything.. Comedy romance action.

Although I loved the stuff Hunter S. Thompson did, it meant nothing when he died. He's done so many drugs and he was extremely depressed, he brought it upon himself. Sorry, it's just that I quit drugs a while back and I don't see why anyone would be upset that he died when I think everyone saw it coming.

Favorite books:
-anything by Chuck Pahlaniuk (writer of Fight Club)
-Discworld Series by Terry Pratchett
-Hitchhiker's and Dirk Gently
-In the Skin of a Lion by Michael Ondaatje
-The Outsider by Albert Camus

I didn't like Da Vinci Code because of the stupid romance. And the premise for the woman's 10 year rift with her grandfather was cuz she saw him having sex while some people chanted. LAME. I was expecting AT LEAST some kind of sacrifice. The rest of the world isn't as conservative as North America, especially Europeans.

read 3 of the 4 Dan Brown books, but i found the Angels and Demons inferior to the Da Vinci code. The climax in that book seemed distasteful... The third book was Deception point but that was more of a techno thriller than a historical detective story...

Dune...omg the best thing i have ever read... Don't know about the offspin of his son but the original chronicles were great (except for book no.2) Frank Herbert is my favourite

I also like Arthur C. Clarke and J.R.R. Tolkien

looking forward to read The hitchhiker...
