FRAPS - How do you shrink video files.

Post by DarkenRahlX »

I'm using a program called FRAPS that records footage from games and it's an excellent program. But there is one problem the AVI files are way too huge. I set everything to the lowest setting but a 2 minute video still turns out to be over 700mb. Is there a program out there that can cut the file size down drastically? If any one has any suggestions on what I should do I'd greatly appreciate it.

Yeah

You'll have to shrink it with programs like adobe premiere or videomach.

Copy raw footage typically dumps to uncompressed AVI. This is a good thing, once done you need to compress into something good like divx or xvid w/ hopefully sound in either mp3/ogg/acc.

Doing the compression while recording is not recommended as it can cause parts of the movie to be cut out while the CPU chugs at 100% usage trying to keep up.

1) dump raw avi from source
2) edit
3) compress into divx/xvid

in that order.

Which would you recommend to use. Divx or Xvid or are both just about the same?

xvid, because it is open-source. Divx has sold out, xvid spawned form divx5 (project mayo).

I'm not familiar with the process but I think you can use vob sub, there is a lot of stuff on google that you can get by asking "how to compress avi to xvid" or "avi2xvid" or some variation along that line.

All the tools should be open-source and free-ware (without spyware/addware). If they ask for a username or email address, then don't use it.

so what gaming footage do you have of??

divx or xvid would make too much a difference, im pretty sure everyone has all the codecs to watch any type of format.

To compress avi files most of the time I use virtual dub.
I use SnagIt to record things, it also got an own editor.
