DBZ!

The latest and greatest of Japanese Animation. Found something new, or perhaps old and arcane... if it has to do with anime, it goes right here.

I will admit, I watched DBZ and loved it, but it went on for so long, and then I found out what else anime had to offer, and lost interest. I just got tired of all the angles they had to push to fight "The Strongest Fighter in the Universe". Oh, now that we fought this guy, there's someone else we didn't know about that is stronger! Now a time-traveller! Now alternate dimensions! Why don't they skip the formalities and just fight God already?

I remember running home from school after football practice every day to watch Dragonball Z. It was around the time when Cartoon Network was airing the epsiode where Goku transformed into a super saiyan for the first time.

Man, I can remember when I started watching the show Cartoon Network was first airing the series. Raditz bitches, Raditz. One of my favorite scenes from the series is still the one in the first episode when Raditz catches a bullet and flicks it back and knocks the gun out of the shooter's hands.

Yeah, that is another reason I stopped enjoying it as much, and really stopped refering to it as an anime. DBZ is the only Anime (Besides the other Dragon Ball Shows Dragon Ball Original and GT) that is more than like 50 episodes long. It has like something close to 500 I believe. Too long.... it's more like a cartoon than an anime, sure it has anime style, but it's got something like a dozen seasons, in terms of one season being 12-15 episodes.

Whoa dude, let me take you to school real quick. First of all the DB series, are far from the only ones that are over fifty episodes. I can names lots of others, like Kenshin for example. Let’s not even go into some of the others like Inuyasha, Ranma, One Piece, and Naruto. Next of all, DBZ is only 276 episodes long. Yeah, that’s a lot, but there are others that can match it. I like long series. Granted, most of the other long ones are better than DBZ. Also, a season of anime general consists of 26 episodes. So, that means it was about 10 seasons long, which is a lot, but it was really only four major arcs. It seems like the anime dragged things out a bit more than the manga. Anyway, that’s it. I’m not trying to be a smart ass; I just like the facts to be known. Oh, and if you were exaggerating a bit, which you probably were, don’t worry about it too much. Heh, I’m just installing a bit of knowledge.

Now, with that said, I’ll admit that I was a big DBZ fan myself. Now days it’s fallen to the wayside, as other much better series have emerged. Yeah, I was really into it though, and I do still like it. You’ve just got to love ubber powerful characters messing shit up. Yeah, it had its moments.

DBZ has about ONE merit: It tries to addict people to watching every ep, which it does quite well. That's fine, really, but I don't like my time wasted wilfully, and DBZ wastes a LOT of time.

So while I guess I understand why a lot of people like it, I can't say I could ever stand watching it all. Maybe if someone compressed it very radically, so that the action actually happens, instead of being dragged out for 15 eps per fight.

Yeah, I can understand that. Man, the thing that really pissed me off, was when they'd do flashbacks. Like, during the Frieza saga, they once actually flashbacked to a flashback of a flashback in the last episode! Yeah, then I saw that happen in Naruto the other day and about went nuts, heh.

At first i watched Dragonball and liked it, but at the first time Dragonball Z started on german Television I thought the translation sucked that much even the voice actors did and so I stopped watching it.

DBZ is the best mainstream anime out there. Period.

I was lucky, because I started watching it back when I was still in my home country, and I was treated to the uncensored version, not the horrible Cartoon Network version. Sure, it was in spanish, but the voice acting was actually pretty good. It starts to get repetitive by the Cell Saga, and Buu should've never happened, but I still enjoy watching one or two episodes of DBZ. Dragonball was funny as hell too.

At least it's not as generic as the rest of the anime bullshit out there.

My friend and I were so into DBZ that we had all of that on tape way before CN aired it. That was the best saga in DBZ.

I would go into why it sucks but I'll assume we all know why.

Starnum - Thanks for the info. I was exaggerating a bit, but it's good to learn new things.

Heres an embarrasing story. When goku turned supersayain for the first time. I got so hyper that i attacked my brother and we got into a big fight. Sure it was my fault, but could you blame me?

I used to act like I could throw Ki. Heh, I'd even cast Final Flashes on people. Now let us never speak of those incidents agian.

Femto: Dude, what are you counting as mainstream anime? I can think of lots of stuff that's better than DBZ. Don't get me wrong, I love DBZ, but it's nowhere near as good as something like, say, Kenshin.

Sorry man, Kenshin is just better. I mean, you can't deny that the plot is better, and that's more important in my opinion. Aside from that, the fight scenes in Kenshin had more detail. Anyway, this is the DBZ thread, so I'll just leave it at that. That's just my opinion, but let's get back to discussing DBZ. Here's a typical question, who's your favorite character? I'm a Vegeta kind of guy myself.

I'm sorry Kenshin was way too feminine for me too find him as awesome. Dragonball Z was it for me when it came down to wanting to see people get their asses stomped!

Dude, what are you talking about? I was talking about Rurouni Kenshin the anime series in general, not the specific character Kenshin. Besides, what about Kenshin was feminine, except his voice actor.

I think he means it's mainstream because it's one of the more popular, somehow almost everybody knows it.

Yeah, when I say mainstream, I mean like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Kenshin doesn't seem to be quite there yet, as far as the US is concerned at least. For the record though, even though Kenshin did have the better plot, the second arc at least, I think I got more enjoyment out of DBZ's first arc.
