Unleaded is $1.20 AU a litre which is fucking outrageous. But you guys had like, cheap fuel before during and after the Iraq war, didn't you? Australia still had expensive as shit fuel since ever.

People were goin crazy at the pumps two days ago because they thought it was going over $2.00/litreCAD. This is from $1.05/L CAD to maybe $1.37 in some stations. Some independent gas stations took this as an opportunity to raise their prices to around $2.00 and up, but they were reprimanded. Things are still okay, even with the Rita aftermath. It wasn't nearly as bad as Katrina apparently.

btw $1USD ~= $1.20CAD and there are 4 litres in a gallon, so that means our gas prices are roughly $4.00 a gallon already :P

Yeah, there were some reports of gas stations around the Toronto area raising the prices to upwards of $2.40CAD a Litre...

That's just about $10CAD a Gallon ($9.60), which would equate to about $8.00US per gallon.

But yeah, on Thursday there were lines at the gas pumps, and it took us 30 minutes to get to a pump to fill our car up. Not to mention with all this extra traffic the city roads, and even the 401 was backed up to all hell.

The interpretations I've read about oil price is that it will decrease as soon as the market calms down...which may take a while IMO

but worry not, the prices can't go sky-high
at 80$/barrel alternative energy sources will become profitable

I don't care that much for the gas prices (I have no car) but oil is something that is used for many things in nowadays life.

that means: if oil prices remain this high it very well may boost inflation

Last time I was in Germany it was something like 1.30 € for 1l.
About 6 dollars for 1 gallon!

It´s time to change the fuel source and leave petroleum behind...

Well I can´t ride, but it would be kinda cool if we all went over to only use them again though :D
Then we can start to rob bank´s once more and get away with it (Just like in the old west :P ).

Problem with ethonol as fuel (and yes, it is drinkable) is that it's only a net energy profit if it's a byproduct of some other agricultural process.

I.E. if you grow corn to feed your cattle, you can process that corn into sour mash, distil off the ethonal, and feed the fermented corn to the cattle. Net energy profit.

BUT

If you just grow the corn, ferment and fuel - you loose energy in the conversion process, because it takes more energy to farm the corn in the first place than you get out in fuel.

Because of this, while alcohol based fuels are certainly an excelent way to CONSERVE energy, they don't actually work as the foundation of an energy economy. You still need net energy input from somewhere else, and that somewhere else is still fossil fuels.

I want an undead horse! Hehe, but I too can't ride.
It's really about time we start to get profitable alternate sources.

Hmm, maybe you could do something profitable with all the sweat then :P like make a sweat engine you can put on your pedals...
I must be tired to even think about something like this.

Go try to invent a machine that produces more power than it uses and you'll get a Perpetuum Mobile.
