That rocks, but Vikings didn't actually wear those helmets, you know.

They didn't? Then who did?

Uh, no one. It's just kind of a made up thing. I don't know where it came from, but actual Vikings didn't wear those *shrugs*.

I am going to go with Norse mythology for many reasons.
1. For starters I am half Icelandic and have a Norse god in my name.
2. Zeppelin
3. Tolkien whose works lead to the whole fantasy genre which lead the the RPG genre with tabletop games like D&D which then led to the computer game RPG market which all dominates. So for all you RPG fans out there you can thank Norse mythology for that.
4. For us over here stateside we hear very little about it for the most part. We hear about Greek/Roman all the time. In my opinion they are the same damn thing with slight variations. The Romans ripped of the Greeks that is all there is too it. If you look at the whole roman culture it was what the Greeks were doing centuries before them. The Romans are a bunch of copy cats, who can't create there own culture so they rip of the nearest one to them that looked good.
calvin wrote:true, but most of the gods only have different names and exactly the same function (ei. god of war, food, etc)
Just so you know all most all mythologies have Gods with those same functions, and if you you look at monotheistic religions they have it as well, except they only have one god and the rest are angles. Early Judaism was based off of Greek mythology among other sources. If you look at alot of the earlier stuff you will see alot of parallels. The major difference is they only call one god God, and the rest of them are angles. If you were offended sorry, that was not the intent of this post, it was just pointing out some things that may be fact or opinion depending on who you ask, we all have our own beliefs lets not start a religious debate in here.

right, but Greek and Roman mythologies have mostly the same sex associated with the same roles also. from what i remember, even the roman gods, which had multiple roles, also had the same multiple roles as the Greek gods. pretty much exactly what you said about the Romans just copying.
don't worry, no offense taken. if i took offense for simple corrections like that, i wouldn't be here.

because they were following the same religion basicly. You'll also notice that the stories are the same too.

I was more referring to offending Christians/Jews/Muslims then I was about your correction. Also I was not correcting you so much as just saying that is not a good argument, since most religions have similar roles, the Greeks and the Romans were very similar I agree. I was saying before that that the Romans blatantly ripped off the Greeks for most of their stuff. Most stories/gods were exactly the same with the exception of names.
On another interesting note, if you look at many major religions you can actually tell of stuff that really happened throughout history. Look at the great flood in Judo-Christian religion for example, it was also mentioned in other stories not at all related to those two(well really three since Islamic is the third installment, or you could even include Baha'i as the fourth installment). Back on topic, looking back we could assume that at the end of the ice age with all the melting the water would have risen, and possibly led to those tales existing in so many religions.
Also was reading an article or watching history channel or something a while back, and a couple of scientists were doing some research and actually came up with a possible scientific explanation for the parting of the water at the Red Sea when Moses would have crossed it. The calculated that if the wind was blowing at the right speed with the tide at the right level, at the area the supposedly crossed the water is shallow enough that it could have actually been affected to be lowered to a level where it could be crossed by them on foot.

The romans just plain ripped off greek mythology and changed the names, period. Are there even any exclusively roman myths?

Romulus and Remus is solely Roman, but like the Greeks would have a myth about how Rome was founded.

Romulus killed Remus in a silly fight. They had drawn a line and then Remus crossed it and then they were busy with fighting. I think that Remus regretted what he had done to his brother so there was some deal that allowed them to see eachother sometimes.

Of course it's a myth. It explains the origin of Rome, founded by descendents of gods and cared by a wolf.
Roman mythology is not exactly copied from greek. But adapted to fit with Greek's culture which was more advanced than Roman's.
I prefer the greek mythology. Athena is my favourite goddess. Wisdom and strength at the same time.

I like Greek mythology most cause there are some many intresting Gods, heroes etc. I like the myth of Achilles most cause its intresting and sad. Thats the only reason i liked The Troy movie, when he dies, i was so angry that a sissy like Paris killed him
I like the story about Odysseus.
I'm gonna borrow Homers books about Odysseus, Achilles and see how the real myth is cause most of the info about these myths have we been told by the movies,tv shows.

I think I like Gabe's idea for Troy better than the real movie.

Just to clarify about the Remus and Romulus debacle.
Remus jumped over the unfinished city wall, an omen of ill fortune, and Romulus instinctively killed him. Remorsefully he then named the city Roma, and made himself king. What a way to show remorse
Roman mythology isn't interesting at all.Hardly anything new, they were the ancient version of Piratebay
Their writers were excellent though, took the stories to another level. They recycled and added bits and pieces to Greek tales. But still, writers like Horatius were great.
Good call regarding the great floods Arresty. It can sadly be compared to the recent Tsunami.People throughout times thought in way or other that it is Gods way of punishing them.If we lived in those times,we wouldn't think about how the Tsunami was created, but think we have sinned and God is simply punishing us,or he is,but you what I mean. For example, there are several stories that are connected to the origin of the Noa's arc,and scientists have figured out (in a complicated way) of where it was and that it was a great flood that took down several mountains and changed the landscape gravely.Thinking that its simply God punishing you was taking the easy way out,not knowing better(understandle, being thousands of years ago and all) and not being able to explain the reasons for a lot of things.Which is why mythology even exist.People not knowing rational reasons for why things happen, and inplemting the responsibility to several kinds of Gods.So they have an answer of why its a drought and people are starving,in Greek mythology it would be that the Goddess of weather(what was her name?) being angry because the God of death hades and her daughter fell in love and ran off together.
The Norse mythology is interesting, but it wouldn't be as interesting if you live in Sweden(or Norway,Iceland,Denmark and etc) as I do.But I understand why so many find it interesting,I do too.The gods are in a way one of a kind, doesnt follow the same formula that most mythologies and "pagan" religions did.Maybe its due to the warrior nature of the vikings

Not your typical society exactly.
The Greek mythology is very well known throughout the world, and it has it reason. Its very interesting and rich. But I can mention one that isn't so well known. The mythology of the Yorùbá,wich is one of the world's oldest widely practised religions(or atleast its claimed to be).The Yoruba people are from Nigeria, but the religion was practised across Africa.Very complex and interesting mythology.Very funny gods
P.S If you guys were Swedish, you would see that the one who started this,isse-pisse-päron-pung,has a very funny name
P.S 2.The founder of this forum is a genius, with the Spell Check function. My brother Libaax(a member here) said his name is something with P,I dont remember. But anyhow, kudos to you man.
