I'm an anime purist now?
lol
I dislike anime, it's stagnant and regurgitates concepts and characters ad infinitum.
That doesn't mean what you're saying is correct.
I like how you went ahead and ignored everything I said with some "you need citations" nonsense.
Quoting wikipedia is not helping your case either.
I'm a senior traditional animation major.
If you don't think what I'm saying is trustworthy then whatever.
I don't feel like arguing the point further.

Jeez, I'm sorry, but this thread is pretty ridiculous. You can quote Wiki all day, but that does really mean jack. It's not like it's an official encyclopedia or anything anyway. Anime is a specific art style, that comes from Japan. It must meet both of those requirements, to be anime. It must be that specific style, and it must be from Japan. That's just how it is, no "if" "ands" or "buts" about it. Regardless of how the Japanese use the word, they speak a different language. It has a different meaning here. In America, anime refers to the style, and the origin of Japan. If something is made in Japan, but doesn't have the anime style, then it's not anime. If something is made in America, but it tries to emulate the anime style, it's not anime. "Totally Spies" is not fucking anime, I'm sorry. Yes, cartoons are animation. The Japanese just say anime and not animation, because it's a different langauge. Yet, nearly everywhere else in the world, anime refers to the style and origin. It's the same with "comics" and "manga". There's two different words for a reason. Hell, they even call Korean comics "manwha" for this very same reason. It's all about the style AND the origin. Over the years, this is what has been established. Jeez, everyone here knows that. Why make such a big argument to try to dispute that?
If I understand correctly though, Afro Samurai IS anime, so at least we established that.

Then please contradict the AHD which is an established dictionary of which is used extensively in education circles.
You both didn't answer my question which is the crux of the entire thread.
Here, I'll quote it again.
Hypothetically let us just say that AS was created and story boarded by a Canadian of non-Japanese decent. He/she however wanted it to be in the same style of anime. Is it still considered anime?
It is a yes or no answer, either you consider it Anime or you don't.
If no, then the Anime is a style of animation that must be created and drawn by Japanese to exclusion of any other country or race.
If yes, then Anime is defined as animation style and technique that developed in Japan.
Your (Femto) title of "senior traditional animation major" counts for something, but I would expect some more knowledge to be demonstrated because while I did quote wikipedia, it didn't do it in masse in comparison with everything else I quoted and cited which happened to include the Pacific-Asian Arts of UCLA and the American Heritage Dicitonary.
The
That's just how it is, no "if" "ands" or "buts" about it.
shouldn't be accepted at face value because it no longer is true.
For the time being, you can call it 'imitation anime' I guess, I still maintane that non-japanese can still produce anime just like how non-japanese can make manga (Studio Ironcat). I make a big argument about it because I think people who make 'anime' even if not japanese should have it considered to be anime.

I already defined what anime is, I see no reason to repeat myself. You don't have to accept that, but that's how it is. I'm writing a story, that I'd love to have animated. However, if it was made in America, I'd want it to be in the anime-style, but I wouldn't call it anime, because it's not from Japan. Regardless of who makes an animated production, if it's good, what does it matter what it's called? I see no reason to argue over semantics. As I have defined anime for you, is the generally accepted use of the word. So, that's how I will always see it, regardless. Feel free to view things as you like as well.

Depends on where it was produced.
A director's country of origin is not enough grounds to call something "anime" or "not anime."
You know, Spirits Within was helmed by Hironobu Sakaguchi but it was actually produced in Hawaii.
It's not anime.
Don't get me wrong, I understand your point regarding style and whatnot but the fact of the matter is, an American show that has an anime style to it is still not anime.
Starnum has the right mindset about this whole issue.

For me anime is the the style of animation that 99% of the time comes from japan.
If Afro Samurai looks like anime style then it is anime.
Also anime isnt simply animation made by japanese. Cause i have seen western animation with the western style that had japanese people work on it.
If Afro Samurai looks like Batman,Alladin,Teen Titans or whatever western animation then its simply not anime.

At first I thought it was just a typo, but you have done it in multiple posts. You stutter when you type.

My problem is i type too fast to even see how i wrote a post.
Normally when i write english in a calm way i don't mess up as much.
Also several times its laziness, i think " eh who cares they see what i mean"
You should see how horrible i am in irc,msn etc.
