I'm not sure how IP addresses work. is there one for every computer, or just one for every internet access? because if he is at college like we are led to believe, he could have access to dozens of computers. I'd estimate we probably have 150-200 here at U of I. There are probably 50 in the library im in and we have another very large library and about 4-5 computer labs/areas.

That is typically how it works, with consumer DSL and cable the IP addresses change from time to time, however in dorm rooms and such the addresses are static per doom room. However, computer labs are typically behind one IP address but could be one per machine.

Regardless, the only one posting from those IP ranges are him, no one else in the forum posts there. Just means he spoiled it for the whole lot. I have no remorse in banning whole address ranges. While working IT in northern Virginia (DC area), I've banned all of Brazil once to limit spam to our customers. Of course, I've unbanned after a few days and never had a spike again.

while I would argue that it's very unlikely that people use this website from the same location, my school library DOES carry the berserk volumes. so the moral of the story, U of I is awesome

You have no concept of what the rolls eyes smiley is or how and under what circumstances it should be used.

I recall that there was a hack for vBulletin that would, instead of banning a user and notifying them, simply trick them into thinking that the server was having problems. They'd be able to log in as normal, but I think 60% of the time it would give them the "forum is down" page, 20% of the time it wouldn't respond to the user at all (which would give your browser's default 404 page), and 10% of the time it would actually work. So in the end they would simply give up posting out of frustration.

I've looked, but I haven't found one for phpBB yet. :(
