Donnie Darko??

Post by Buzkashi »

Okay, okay so i just watched this flick. And I just cant understand the point of it. Is it that our lives are always predetermined and that we cant change it no matter what. Or is it that we can only find true peace in death?

I don't think you'll ever come across the actual point the director was trying to convey since I've yet to hear what he has to say on the message of the movie. To each his own but I think both things you said were close to what I would've said.

I watched it with the wife, and we both enjoyed it. If you haven't seen it, watch the original version. The directors cut is absolutely horrid. I was frustrated after 10 minutes of the commentary track.

The movie itself covers many different areas but mostly explores the paradox of time travel, or rather the application of knowledge that you shouldn't have and it's effect.

Even the director, Richard Kelly was quoted as saying that he didn't know what the correct interpretation was.

My only gripe is that if you dig to deep into the movie's philosophy, you will start to find plot holes and can logically deconstruct the philosophies and find flaws with them.

Another movie that tried another tangent of this type was The Butterfly Effect, which the wife and I absolutely despised.

Anywho, to get your fill on theory and other guff, go here:

Oh, if you compare both movies you can kinda think of something thats similar. In the Butterfly Affect the only way to make everyones lives better was to make sure he never existed (which was supposed to happen anyways). And what im thinking in Donnie Darko is that kind of a Final Destination thing happened. Where he saw the future and could live that life. But if he choose that life he would live but e veryone else would suffer and die. So after all that shinanagins with "frank". He came to in his bed minutes before the engine landed in his room. What I think happened is that he new he could avvoid it but he decided to take it and save the world.

I would have considered Frank to be the 'artifact' of the original timeline that is now effecting Donnie's current tangent.

Both movies boil down to a decision, 'sacrifice myself for the greater good'. The rest of the story is about philosophical tangents that while fun, don't go into any real depth or are flat out false.

Don't get me wrong, Donnie Darko is an amazing movie with great acting. I also enjoyed the remake of the Tears for Fears song "Mad Mad World". ^_^

I hate watching movies twice over. Unless theres a big space inbetween both times I watch the movies in general.

2001 and independant. That woudl be why you can't find trailers. Very good film though. I highly recommend it.

***SPOILER***

The directors cut dvd came out like last week. I heard its not as good as the original because they explain too much. I liked Donnie Darko a lot. I think Donnie was supposed to die and somehow he didnt which threw him and everyone else into a loop, similar to Groundhog Day. The only way to stop it was for Donnie to die.

I also liked Butterfly Effect.

Butterfly Effect VHS > Butterfly Effect DVD

That ending was just stupid.
I really liked the movie before they added and changed stuff.

As for Donnie Darko, I used to like it til my girl watched it obsessively everyday.
I didn't like the directors cut either, but my opinion is bias as I made that decision after the "Donnie Darko Marathon"

The director's cut of the movie tried to explain every detail... which is insulting because I want plot and story, not mechanics. I know how that shit works, or if I don't I'll look it up. There are some minor edits in the original version that makes the overall feel of the film great. By adding in all the fluff, like what was in the director's cut, it decreases the quality of the film. Also, in the director's cut, they removed some lines that I thought were funny. There are a lot of qips in donnie darko that make the film fun to watch. Without them, you get a movie that is to serious for it's own good.
