Afro Samurai is based on a graphic novel by Takashi Okazaki and is planned for release at the end of 2006 on Spike TV. Following the North American debut, the mini-series is scheduled for broadcast release in Japan. Afro Samurai is a fusion of animation, science fiction and hip-hop that GONZO, producer of the series and a division of GDH, is using to create the next evolution in entertainment.

"Afro Samurai has a fascinating story line and will undoubtedly have GONZO's stunning animation. High impact titles like this emphasize FUNimation's 'quality over quantity' strategy," says Gen Fukunaga, president and CEO of FUNimation Entertainment. The tale of Afro Samurai takes place in a unique world that is part ancient Japan and part futuristic science fiction fantasy. Samuel L. Jackson stars as "Afro" the solitary samurai on a quest to avenge the wrongful death of his father. It is a story of bloody hardship and pain. Afro sheds no tears and knows no love. Forever chased by powerful enemies in a lawless technology- speckled dystopia, he evades bullets and blade to reach his final prey: a man who will not die.

Anyway it looks pretty nice except that the hero is a black with an afro.

Here's what I got out of that:

Samurai Champloo + Samuel Jackson = This show

I'll watch it on the condition that there is a Snakes on a Plane reference somewhere in the show.

That's what I was thinking. Revenge plots are a dime a dozen, but I'm sure I'll check this out. Not expecting to much though, but we'll see.

fuck yeah. i totally agree. snakes has to be in there somewhere. but given it has some story plot. its great that RZA is doing the music, and it looks mostly promising. i just dont think we need another samurai champloo.

Alright, I saw all of Afro Samurai. It may have brought me back into anime. Afro Samurai is just plain fucking awesome. The fights are sweet, voice acting is hilarious(in a good way), and the animation is top-notch.

I would give it a 10/10 if my ratings mattered. Please pick this one up.

It should but remember how big a isssue that was? Some 9 page thread saying if it is anime or not....

That was a pretty retarded argument. Animation produced by a Japanese studio based on a Japanese manga pretty definitely makes it animé; Afro Samurai is animé.

Anyone know the insturmental song with the trumpets that plays during the episode four fight when he still has the teddy bear helmet on? It plays at the start of the fight until the flashback.

oh and the song isn't on the official soundtrack.

One thing I must say. The soundtrack isn't all that. Of course maybe because I'm such a Wu-Tang fan I expected better. But the beats were definately throw back. That aspect Rza got back now just do a Wu album like that............

Man its gonna be Timz and Shorts this summer.

On another note the anime is decent.
