I think you can do without the reds.

O_o I would say an intrecate tatoo counts as the ultimate fanart. Kind of hard to beat that! Nevermind that's a damed big tatoo, maybe 50 hours of pain I guess.
I never saw an anime tatoo like that before. I'm gonna share that image.

Actually, the coolest thing about that tatoo is the brand on the neck. That alone I think kicks the most ass.

It's much better.

Let me give you a suggestion: Use the linework to your advantage.

Look at the bottom of his nose for example, where his nostril is. There is quite a bit of crosshatching around that area, right? That's the linework telling you that that particular area is darker than the rest and you should acknowledge that and shade it accordingly. Same with the area around the eye, you've put a dark spot in there but, for all intents and purposes, there shouldn't really be any.

The dark spot came from the color curving and contrast adjustments I made to tweak the image.. really didn't notice how pronounced it was. I'll have to go back to a previous version and omit that area from the adjustments. I'll shade the lined areas some more and see how it turns out.

Edit:

First attempt at a more complex coloring. The hammer looks like ass, so my apologies for that, as does the hand holding it. Lost interest and so I didn't really finish it up.. oh well ~_~, it passed some time while waiting for WoW servers to come back up.

Image

*Edit: Updated the image, removed the hammer and outstretched arm completely; created a new right arm out of the old one and positioned it downward.*

I wasn't too sure what to do with the background, so I just dicked around with it a bit:

it still seems a little dark. the color by his chin in the bottom left corner should be the sky or something. it was white for a reason ;). but its looking good

Arrgh this thing gave me so much trouble. I told myself after the first large coloring that I wouldn't do another, but decided to do one more. The image had crosshatchings on it which made it a real pain to get the lineart in. The coloring went well and looked good after it was done but I had major problems getting the lines to come through properly and almost abandoned it completely. Instead I did a few things and produced a crappy version that at least fixed a few of the problems; making it small, blurring parts and such. Still... i'm quite dissapointed :(

*Edit* Made a quickie background for it so it wouldn't be quite as bland ~_~

Newbified: His skin seems really yellow, you'd think that Gutts would be very tan for being a soldier.

thanks so much EvilDmitri! its looks great.

btw, i love that pic of young guts. the background is a little too bright for me,(and i agree about the skin thing) but the rest of the coloring looks very nice. i like his pants, bloodstain, armor, and the shadowing.
