I think I may stick with my... er... original Star Wars DVD box set- George Lucas didn't rape it too badly. Except for Jabba and some other stuff.

Still don't actually own this. I have it in other formats though.

I never got the huge honkin' big deal with people complaining about non-original releases on DVD. It's not like Luke was suddenly a cat or something.

I believe it has to do with the principle of the matter more than any thing for a lot of these Star Wars fanboys. For a lot of people, Star Wars played a huge roll in their lives, and when you can't get the original that you saw in the theaters back in what ever year, it justs screws with your mind that the creator would change it like he did. A lot of these people just want to experience the movie the way they did the first time. "Why change it? It was perfect as it was." That is the kinda stuff you hear from the SW fan boys. Which makes plenty of sense. I am just not that big of a Star Wars fan, I could not care less.

Yes, because Han shooting first makes such a major impact on watching the movie. That's the most common complaint I hear about the "remastered" discs.

Upon looking at a couple other forums, the fanboys are still complaining! "Oh any real fan has the Laserdisc transfers on DVD already" yadda yadda yadda.

Femto, if you have a better reason for the want of these original DVDs... for the love of all that is sane, let me know! I hope I'm missing something. Just seems like the fanboys will whine about anything and everything.

Way I see it... Lucas made the movie, it's his property and he doesn't have to do jack crap. I mean cmon, he basically crapped on some film and called it Episode I. Yet everyone still bought the DVD!

The thing is, is that the original should be easily accessible like the new version, especially when the new version is in question like this is. Sure, the hard core elite SW jerk offs have the laser disc version, great for them, but not every body is so "in the loop." They just want the original version to relive the memories of watching it for the first time. I think this is more than sound of a reason to buy the originals. It is why I buy some original versions of video games.

Don't be fooled by the complaining bitches on the internet. They make up a very small portion of the people that want this to happen. That is another thing, people on the net have to complain no matter what. End of story.

You've probably heard the story before, but the thing with Han is that he changes during the course of the three movies. He started ruthless, shoot-first-ask-questions-later and then became more noble. Lucas ruined that by having Han shoot first, which makes the character less developed.

It's not a massive issue and when I saw it I didn't think it was too terrible (they more or less shoot at the same time), but it was an unncessary change. Same as having the dude that played Anakin in the prequels show up in the end of Jedi. That actually angered me more than the "Han shot first" thing.

I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but the "fanboys" have really valid complaints, Lucas had no excuse to make the changes he did. When you make something, or finish it rather, and release to the masses, you can't just make changes like that because you were unhappy with stuff you did.

That being said, I'm still unsure on whether I should get these or not. I'd feel dirty because I know Lucas is just milking the franchise some more (and then even more with HD-DVD/Blu-Ray). I think the discs will contain both versions or something like that which would be ideal (I don't know what the quality in the original versions will be) but I also heard that each movie will be released separately, which would pretty much kill it for me.

I'm taking the "wait and see" approach with this one.

Sure you do. It's called "it's my work, and I'll change it how I want to". He has obviously acknowledged the changes... sorry, I just don't see how he's not allowed to change it just because millions of people enjoyed his work.

Adding in the Anakin character... I guess I can sort of see why maybe he did that. It's s stretch though.

I'm not a huge fan of Star Wars myself, I'd see it once and that's enough for me. Although I wouldn't mind watching it everytime it's on the TV, I wouldn't waste my money on it.

Now, Blade Runner, that's the finest movie ever...

It's not that he's not allowed, but it shows lack of character and is disrespectful to his fans.

"I don't like how I did this, so I'll just change it to please myself."

Fuck him.

I never saw Blade Runner, I heard it was alright.

And I agree that the new versions and the changes to SW is kinda of a big fuck you to fans. Sure he can change it, but why not have the original as available as the new one? Is he trying to convert the masses to favor his vision? Lucas is a shitty writer, director, what ever the hell you want to call him. Some of the better lines that gave Han more character were actually improvised by Ford. I know I may be speaking heresy to some people here, but I just don't think Star Wars is godly or that great at all. New Hope was the best one, and Empire was almost as good, and that is about it. The rest where not even that good.

I own the 'special edition' trilogy on VHS and DVD- the only thing that actually bothers me with the special edition (with the exception of New Anakin at the end of IV, I have yet to see the DVD incarnation of that) is the horrendous Jabba in IV.

It makes some sense for him to be there, and it ties in with VI very well, but he is physically smaller than in I and practically tiny compared to his sluggishly splendorous form in VI. The CG is horrible- the added/improved scenes with the X-wings and such look good, but Jabba looks horrible. Why?

As for Han shooting first, yes, it's silly, but I really couldn't care less.

Lucas is a joke.
