I use McAffee cause I can get if for free though my school, but if I was not in school i would probably hit up Avast!, cause it is free for personal use. And it is just as good as any other today. Its gotten to the point that anyone will protect you just as well as the next pretty much. Just comes down to personal preferance, and I like free.

AVG worked well for me. I don't like Avast though, that's the one I'm currently using. That's because it was given to me.

Linux: The world's antivirus (to be taken seriously).

Even more important is that you are the best anti-virus out there. Don't do stupid shit. Don't download warez. Don't run executables. Don't use Outlook. If you are to frustrated with your computer getting spyware and adware then I suggest you stop using it. The only thing you are doing is frusting yourself and making those fat-cats richer. Educate yourself. Don't expect others to baby you, don't expect your operating system to protect you. Even when I use Windows for work, there are certain things that you just avoid doing... because it will bite you in the ass.

Repeat after me:
*I will only download software from the author's website.
*I will not download warez.
*I will not use kazaa/sharizza/etc etc
*I will will not use outlook (or express) to check my mail.
*I will try my best to stop using windows.

I use windows to play games. I use the mac to surf the net, check email.

If you want to use Linux, I guess you really have to educate yourself to use it. My brother had it on the comp once, and since I use the comp to play games 99% of the time, Linux wasn't much help to satisfy my entertainment needs. If you plan to use your comp for work or some serious shit, get a mac or linux. If you plan to play games, read comics, do some crazy shit, get Windows. It's not like the anti-spyware and antivirus is gonna protect your comp forever.

You can, but there are limits. Not every windows games works on Linux. Only selected ones do. I know there's an ACDSEE for Linux, but it's badly programmed and configured. Everything functions just as the same, but the interface may take time adjusting. Ask Psi for the details.

If you are thinking of using linux... I don't play many computer games any more. I find myself doing more work to which Linux is a perfect fit because in order to get real work done... using Windows(tm) definently will not pay the bills. MS makes one damn fine game playing OS though, I give them that much. I gave up the ability to play LOTS of computer games so that I can get work done.

*If you are a gamer, and that is your life... then by all means, stay with Windows. While cedega is making strides to get Windows only games to play under Linux, it isn't perfect.

Actually, I'm quite happy with the fact that I can run Steam on Linux via cedega and play HL2 and Counter-Strike: Source. I'm not that hard-core of a gamer to validate the existance of Windows on my computer(s).

Let's see, my typical usage would be:
Apps:
Maya 6.0 w/ Renderman - 3D design
Blender - 3D design
Gimp - 2d graphics
Mozilla (Firefox/Thunderbird) - email/www
IBM's Blackdown SDK - java programming
Eclipse - programming environment (IDE)
GNAT - ada programming
GCC - c/c++ programming
x-chat/gaim - irc/msn/icq/aim/yahoo/gadu-gadu/etc,etc
tvtime - cable tv viewing application (hi-def tv rocks!)
ogle - DVD player software (goes to 5.1 surround sound system)
kuickview - image viewer (manga,images, everything under sun)
mplayer - movie player, every format known to man and then some.
xmms - music player (mp3,wmv,mpeg,mp2,ogg,aac,flac,etc,etc)

gamage:
Alpha Centuri
Ages of Empires 2
UT/UT2k3/UT2k4
Neverwinter Nights
Steam (HL,HL2,CS:S)
Quake/Quake2/Quake3/Doom3
Morrowind
etc etc... (lots of games work under linux, some with help of Cedega, but not all).

Soo... long story short. If you make the move to linux (or to any other OS), you will exprience some wierdness in getting used to how things 'work'. Distrubtions like Redhat's Fedora try to minimize that by offering you easy to follow directions on how to get the Linux up and running. Just don't go thinking that using Linux is a walk in the park.

If you really want something nice, go buy Apple. It ain't free, but it does work and works well.

We had Linux for 3 hours till I removed it. Too technical, I'm a simple person just using the computer to play games and other entertainment. I liked the FOOT though

Like Psi said, Serious work: Mac/Linux

Play/Entertainment: Windows/Windoze

Unless you live REALLY hardcore, wait for WINE to come out (Wine Is Not an Emulator). It's an OS that runs Windows program under a Linux Environment. Or Lindows. Haven't tried them out, and the last time I ever heard their names muttered were 2 years ago.

Eldo: Wine has been out since the early 90s. It is not an OS. It sits on top of Linux and acts like middleware to allow Windows based applications to run on Linux. This is also open source software.

I use WINE to play Steam games like HL2 and CS:S.

The footprint is the GNOME footprint, which is like a trademark of the GNOME project. GNOME is a GUI, like the explorer shell. It offers the user the ability to use the desktop. GNOME is one of many different environments that you can use.

Linux is only as hard to learn as you want it to be. Redhat's Fedora is as simple as point and click.

Thanks for pointing it out for me Psi. I always thought that WINE was a OS, but my brother tells me otherwise. Heh, I don't believe that Fat Bastard (tm). I don't know how these programs behave because I just hear about them but never used them.

I remembered Lindows because Microsoft sued them.

Eldo: Yeah, I'm not sure what to think about Lindows. They try to make it look and act exactly like Windows.

Back on topic though... Virus Scanners. As listed in other posts *hint hint Caktus you lazy bastard*, you can get freeware (minus spy/nagware) virus scanners here:

suggest a good, fast linux for newbies. i tried mandrake 10.1 but i was wondering if theer was a friendlier one out there...

Also, i notice that linux is able to access my ntfs files, but not edit/delete them. Any way to enable that functionality? Can files written in linux be opened in windows ( as i can only access the net through windows.)?

Another query relating to mandrake 10.1's kde, the folder and file names are in a very ugly format, as it seems linux does not abbreviobiate names as windows does...by default. I failed to find the setting for that.

A good, easy to understand console command guide will also be appreciated
