I highly recommend this anime for those who havent heard of it. I look forward to it as much as the latest chapter of Berserk (tho this comes out every week as anime usually does). The story really draws you in.

Do you watch the anime too? And if so does it follow the manga?Trog wrote:I read Vol. 5-18(end) of the manga last week.
It's really addictive stuff. The mangaka is a expert at building suspense and creating complex, intelligent stories.
If you like Monster, I would also recommend 20th Century Boys written by the same mangaka and storywise even better than Monster.

I love it then, where do you get teh manga from?Trog wrote:I watched the first 18 episodes of the anime, then switched to the manga.
The anime and manga are plotwise completely identical, but in this case I think manga is the better medium to convey the atmosphere/suspense that the mangaka (can't remember his name) creates.

I don't think the direct downloads work, so you'll have to use the torrent provided for all 18 volumes.
I can also find all 18 volumes at #ckmoney

i heard about 20th century boys, but i've been hearing mixed opinions about it, though. Some people like it better than monster, while others like monster more. Ill read it after it's finished anyway.Trog wrote:I read Vol. 5-18(end) of the manga last week.

Wow, im surprised the manga does a better job creating the suspense. Even though i havent read the manga, I do recommend watching the anime, at least a couple of episodes, but you did this Trog... so what made you switch to the manga. Did something disappoint?
I always wonder why anime in general always stray from the manga? Im guessing it is to provide a different story for those who have read it.
Well... manga gives the creator a greater control over how much information the reader gets. one main artistic means the mangaka uses to create suspense, so
in this case I'd say manga is the superior medium for conveying the
authors storytelling techniques. Besides I think the manga does a better
job at creating cliffhangers at the end of the chapters.
On top of that the manga is complete, so there is no danger that the suspense created by a cliffhanger fades while waiting for some sub group to do the next ep. (one week later).
But when the anime is being done there is music, imagery, and animation that help contribute to the mood and atmosphere. Besides, since it is done there are no fillers and the creators of the anime know what they're working with. Besides, couldn't what you just said also be for the anime? The people doing the anime could basically follow how much info is being given by the mangaka in the corresponding chapter.Trog wrote:Well... manga gives the creator a greater control over how much information the reader gets. I just watched eps 18 -21 of the anime. While I see your point about how music, imagery and animation could contribute to the atmosphere it just doesn't work for me.raziel wrote:But when the anime is being done there is music, imagery, and animation that help contribute to the mood and atmosphere. Here are my (entirly subjective) opinions about these elements of the anime:
Music: the anime is very selective about where it to use music. Long sequences of the anime are without music. This is good since it helps create a brooding mood. On the other hand the music used in the anime is sub-optimum (for example there is no really threatening psycho-theme a la Trigun-Perfect Night as a contrast to the prevailing silence,...)
And listening to the same boring track every time someone says that he believes in Tenma's innocence sucks. (Makes me want to turn of my speakers)
Animation: The animation doesn't really improve the mood. It only gives the anime a wrong pace in several cases.
Imagery: there is no imagery in the anime that's not in the manga.
Like I said above these are only my personal opinions.

Ok, question to anyone who's read the manga and whatched the anime: Is there any reason to watch the anime after you've read the manga? I'm currently in volume 12 in the manga, and I don't really want to watch all the same stuff over again. I imagine the anime will need a good deal of time to get to that place.
Recently I've been quite disappointed with anime that comes from excellent manga, so I need a recommendation. Is there anything beyond the manga?
