Berserk and Terminator 2 (don't read Killfile, big spoilers)

Post by Femto »

I was watching Terminator 2 for the millionth time and, towards the end, there's a part where the Terminator's arm gets stuck on a cogwheel and he has to cut it off.

Miura has mentioned that he's a big fan of James Cameron, so yeah.

Apologies if someone has mentioned this before, it was a light epiphany for me.

PS: Terminator 2 kicks huge amounts of ass.

i doubt that it had any bearing on the manga as Miura started working on the manga by 1988, ie before T2 was made.

And just like that, my great epiphany is shattered into a million pieces.

Still, even though armless Guts has existed since the beginning of the story, it's possible that Miura hadn't really finalized how he lost it until after seeing the movie or maybe even changed what he had in mind.

In any case, how it happened in the movie and Miura stating that he's a James Cameron fan is a big coincidence, even if it is nothing more than that.

Maybe Cameron is also a fan of Miura, and he liberally copied that scene to T2. Anyone got an interview with Cameron on his favourite artist?

Ha. Owned.

I guess that made this thread more useless than it was initially. The only way to salvage is to change the title of this thread to something along the lines of 'Miura's Inspiration' and talk about the things from media and etc that inspired Miura to create Berserk the way it is now.

I don't think the Eclipse storyline was out before the Terminator 2 script was written.

Still, I don't think it's a matter of "copied," it's more of a "I like this and I'll try to put it in my work."

Like Watsuki did with Spawn and Apocalypse in Kenshin.

In my book, that's *liberal* copying, which ain't bad. It's actually good, as long as someone doesn't "liberally" copy a whole plot and setting.

Like you said, coincidence. I seriously don't think it's anything more than that though. While it can be debatable about the way how Guts lost his hand is somewhat relatively similar to how the Terminator lost his, I'll have to bring myself to force that connection into my head.

As for the event of the eclipse, I think that storyline came out before Terminator 2 did. Guts had the brand since volume, met the God Hand between the end of volume 2 and volume 3 as the count called for them with the behelit. These events are linked to the eclipse. There may have been some alterations to the eclipse as originally intended, but that's all speculation and assumptions.

I'm on 56k dialup right now until my ISP hooks me back up. I'm also using an obsolete PowerBook G3 laptop that has a built-in modem which happens to be the only dialup modem that's functional around. I can't run IRC or anything of the sort on this computer, since the ports are blocked by my current internet. This is only temporary though, I should be back and running in 4 days or and bring some happy releases or something to that effect.

I don't know what I'll without four days of Eldo-chat.

I might have to turn to Buzkashi for comfort.

You can't possibly know because you've never been there to see how it is when you're not there.

I've heard the tales about its insanity. Haven't experienced it first hand, never been there to see how it is when I'm not there. I'll try that some day.

getting back to the topic;
while the story of the eclipse and all was quite planned before he set to work on it, Miura does seems to have been inspired by that specific scene. but then who can say.

Remember that Volume 1 of Berserk was released on November 11, 1990.

Volume 13 specifically with the eclipse arrived on japanese stands around March 28, 1997. Give a year for the 10 chapters... so we can safely assumed he inked the eclipse somewhere around 1996.

That is about 4~5 years post Terminator 2. You never know, Femto's original post is still valid. Good eye, however we can never know for sure.

Also remember that Miura specifically mentioned Army of Darkness and how he hoped that Sam Raimi wouldn't sue him because of how the main characters looked alike. He said it wasn't intentional and that he was already done with Volume 1 when Army of Darkness was released... also in 1991.

He's also a Hellraiser fan if I remember correctly, which explains where he got Void's kisser from.

As I said, it's not a rip-off, it's more of a homage.

That is probably the most retarded thing I've ever heard.

I say probably because Mune is really fighting to get that title over at Gaming.

What I said is true, or can you dispute it? CAN YOU?

But I see why it's retarded, and thank you for noting it.

Am I winning?

On a side note, it has been said that there are a very limited amount of actual stories in the world- all things new are just re-makes. They're not even recurring basic themes, but actual storylines that get repeated over and over again.

Maybe after this post.

There are a few basic plots, characters, etc., people just arrange them differently, with different casts, scenarios etc. which, more often than not, had already been created.

Just look at anime, archetypes a plenty. I haven't seen many original characters in years.

Combining scenarios and all, it's one's own judgement which determines if they are originals in their own right, or combined oldies.

Example: After seeing Yojimbo I watched A Fist Full of Dollars. Almost exactly the same scenario, just the setting was different.

Seven Samurai contains pretty much every anime stereotype ever made, except for maybe female characters.

That doesn't mean each and every one of these characters are the same though.
