Saddam attacked the Kurds with Mustard Gas after they started rebelling against him.
Nevermind that the US encouraged the rebellion.
Nevermind that the US provided the gas.
Nevermind that the US refused to help arm the Kurds.
More on US manipulation of Iraqi internal civil wars here.
I'm sure the Kurds are glad to be rid of him - Saddam was a genocidal maniac - but the United States is no friend of the Kurdish people.
The Kurds represent about 15-20% of the population of Iraq, as opposed to the Arab population (which hates us) of about 75-80% [source]

You are simply a factbook of the blame America first crowd.Killfile wrote:Saddam attacked the Kurds with Mustard Gas after they started rebelling against him.

Nevermind that the Russians and the French provided him with over 3/4 of his WMDs...I read it in a magazine like Newsweek or something like that so I'll try to find the story...developing

The WMDs which were never found?ucrzymofo87 wrote:Nevermind that the Russians and the French provided him with over 3/4 of his WMDs...
Anyway, France and Russia may have sold weapons to Saddam, but at least they had the decency not to try and police the criminal elements of the world they had had a hand in creating in the first place.

Clouding the waters are we? It won't work. Saddam HAD a WMD program before the 1991 gulf war in which we dropped thousands of tons of high explosives on said program.ucrzymofo87 wrote:He didn't have weapons of mass destruction, remember?
Weapons inspectors went into the country under control of the United Nations and remained there during much of the Clinton presidency. According to Scott Ritter, the head of the UN weapons inspection program, the teams were successfull and the WMDs were removed.
BUT the events we are talking about predate W's war, the inspections, and the 1991 gulf war. These are Regan era events. Get your facts straight.
Key word there is FACT -- as in indisputeable fact. That said, I'm not part of the "blame America first" crowd - but I am a historian. I am professionaly interested in making sure that politicaly motivated revisionists such as yourself don't corrupt the historical record. THe US provided poison gas to the Iraq regime under Saddam to help hold Iran at bay and prevent the creation of a pan-islamic state. Good or bad? I'm not the judge of that. But that's what happened.ucrzymofo87 wrote: You are simply a factbook of the blame America first crowd.
You have to do better than "I read that in a magizine somewhere" You also have to be more specific -- do you mean Pre-1991 WMDs or G.W. Bush's mythological post 2002 WMDs?ucrzymofo87 wrote: Nevermind that the Russians and the French provided him with over 3/4 of his WMDs...I read it in a magazine like Newsweek or something like that so I'll try to find the story...developing
We as americans have to face up to what we have allowed our leaders to get away with. We voted for them, or in some causes they have been put into power by those who themselves where put into power by people we have voted for.
Thing is, Killfile is pointing out the facts. Sometimes we don't like them, but we shouldn't hide from them nor should we cover them up with revisionist history.
Didn't mean to necro, but I liked this thread... and I've been sick for the past 3 days.

people should learn facts from books, not magazines..

Chomsky is challenging stuff - I'm glad to see someone on here has read his work. My wife doesn't hold him in quite as high a reguard as you do - though even mentioning someone of his caliber gets you points in my book.
The Kosovo peacekeeping mission (I'm not prepared to debate semantics on that) had it's problems, to be sure. It is a sad thing that the United Nations which was founded, among other reasons, to prevent a genocide from happening again has singularly failed in that task not once, but several times.
There were real humanitarian reasons to send troops into Kosovo. Too bad we didn't acomplish any of them.
