The turn off/on feature would be nice, I agree.
Probably won't be implemented till next week because of my little bros coming down to visit today.
Another option would be to have a link at the top beside FAQ or something that said "Chat" which took you similiar looking forum page, but instead of forums there is a java based IRC that auto-magically takes you to say #mindwerks.
So long as you had tabs, you could switch back and forth. Saves me bandwidth, and there would be more than 5 lines.

Sounds like a great idea psi, take your time on that, I'm sure everyone can still go beta-testing on this for a little longer. I seriously didn't think you could have the chatbox up and running so quickly.

alrighty, so I've implemented the Chat Room that people can goto. The finishing touches shall be letting others know when people are on IRC which I can do, just might take awhile to figure out.
I like this method over the chatter box because it keeps the forums clean. Either open it in another windows or a tab and you should be good to go.
When connecting it sends you to #mindwerks. Anyone who logs into #mindwerks.. you know where they came from.

I think that if we keep the chat box it'd be easier to get people on IRC by just posting a quick "get your ass on IRC" to somebody.
Or we could sticky an IRC thread somewhere that people can bump to ask others to get on chat.
What we have right now is actually more like what I was thinking of when I first requested a chat room, something web based where we could see what members are chatting from right here in the forums.

Well, I like this IRC solution better, at the bottom you see a list of who is currently in the chat room. So if no one is online, then there is your answer. Most people, like myself leave the window open. Sometimes I'm AFK, sometimes I'm not. That is why I like the forums. I can post, then come back an hour later to get a response.
I no longer have the time to baby sit real-time chat. The closet form of that would be the chatter box I had up earlier... but it really is just a spam fest thread in disguise that goes back 5 lines.
I'm currently very satisfied with the Mindwerks chat room, at least you know the people that go there are people that came from it from here. People who use real IRC clients like irssi, mIRC, xchat, or hydraIRC can log in there as well and don't need to log in here.
Summation: Only people who log into the forums can use the java based IRC client. Saves me bandwidth and gives more benefits to those who actually have an account.
