My favorites would be In flames, Cradle of filth, Children of bodoom, Nocturnal rites, Falkenbach and Slayer.
But there are more good bands such as Dimmu borgir, Rammstein, Slipknot, Dissection, Deicide, Soulfly, Sepultura, Korn, Crematory and so on
I have never heard of TOOL maybe i should get some and hear how they sound.

Smallest avatar around.
good to know theres some tool fans here. they're my favorite band without a doubt. i like how they have calculated aggression in their songs.
slipknot, gah i hate nu-metal.
opeth, have heard some of their stuff, dont like them but respect them. they 're really versatile with the songs they come up with.

I love metal, but I hate when the singer tries to sound evil or does a death roar or screams too much. I cant think of a good example right now, but I think you know what I mean. Thats why I dont care for a lot of black metal or death metal.

I wouldn't say Slayer is a good example. You might not like Slayer for which I can understand why but if you look at their lyrics, Tom is a pretty smart guy. At the same time, while reading his lyrics you can tell he's just fooling around with the ideas of satanism/nazis and he's not serious. I actually prefer that type as opposed to bands like Dissection and Deicide who are actually Satanists. Glen Benton of Deicide isn't such a bad guy, despite not agreeing with him on his views, he's still good compared to someone like Jon of Dissection. I'm sorry to say but when a murderer(Bard 'Faust' Eithun formerly of Emperor) joins the band (Dissection) and leaves because Jon's views are way too satanic for him, what does that say? Not to mention the whole fiasco with Mayhem (godfathers of black metal) when Varg Vikernes killed Euronymous(Oystein) and went around bragging to some chick about how evil he was and was caught because of it. I don't know how many of you are aware of the black metal mafia as they called it in Norway and how they went around burning churches and did some other crazy stuff, at the time the black metal scene had people trying to prove how evil they were. Varg who once wanted to prove how evil and satanic he was, is now a Neo-Nazi and the whole thing is quite silly. I don't know, I just think if you want to prove how evil you are, you're looking for attention and you want to use the shock value as a way to earn money a la Marilyn Manson.
Btw, Emperor is another great band.

I take back "all metal is good metal" statement... hopefully nu-metal isn't as funny as Gay-metal. http://www.pinksteel.org/pit_gmc_1.html

Well I like to be able to actually understand the lyrics, usually. But i mean, sometimes I'd be in the mood for some cradle of filth, although they dont scream all the time, so its easier on my ears, too much screaming/growling gives me really bad headaces. And yes i do love alot of Paradise Lost's music.psi29a wrote:Damien: melodic? As in Paradise Lost?

This just in: heavy metal vocalists scream a lot! I know what they were talking about, thanks for clarifying that captain obvious. Since they mentioned people pretending they're evil, I think that's quite evident in some peoples' lyrics thus I brought that up. How long have you guys listened to heavy metal for? After a while you can pick up what most of them are saying unless it's a band like Cryptopsy where I'm sure the vocalist doesn't even have a clue what he should be saying. If you guys are listening to black metal thinking most of it is about the music, it really isn't. There would be no need for corpse paint, no more viking armor or weapons and the such.Trog wrote:They were talking about the performance of the vocalist, not about the contents of his lyrics. Thus Slayer is a good example. That vocalist screams a lot.
Btw, there's no harm intended in my post, just playing although it was surprising to hear you guys like metal but don't like the screaming.

You can be very much conisdered metal, and not have to scream, by just having really hard bass, and guitar, and drum beats. Plus the type of scream that usually puts me off is from black metal or death metal..

I know it's possible to be metal without screaming or howling, the majority of the stuff I listen to is power metal/epic metal so it's pretty much all clean vocals. It's funny that they have a definition of metal at wikipedia considering that heavy metal is so hard to categorize, even they said so themselves.
Heres the thing, I don't mind if singers yell and howl like a wolf, it's gotta have purpose or meaning. Or it should be organized within the song. From waht i've heard of black/death metal, its too damn chaotic, it borders on just being noise. I realize there probably are meaningful stuff being said, but I'm not that good at picking up lyrics when other instruments are blasting away
mrjotaan: didnt no that people werent always serious with what they sing about. I also was under the assumption that people who like death/black metal were satanists and such, but from what i see, you dont seem like one.
LOL, i just remembered a funny story, showing the intelligence of Tom Araya. There was news of some teenagers who were listening to some music from Slayer and in the song it talks about sacrificing a virgin or something, but they instead find some virgin, rape her and then kill her. When Tom hears of this he, being the Einstein that he is, says they should've killed her first, at least. Needless to say, chaos followed.

When you're in the heavy metal business and you're mainstream, you have to approach situations the way Tom Araya did. When Tom writes music, he says he tries to write it from the perspective of whatever he's talking about. For example when he was writing about serial killers, he tried to write from the perspective of one which might seem silly but hey, whatever works. Honestly, I barely listen to black metal anymore. There's not enough black metal out there that can just be about the music, not about the Satanist aspect. I stopped listening to the majority of black metal because it completely contradicts my religion and I got tired of hearing satanist ideals. Death metal is not the same as Black metal, I'd say Black metal is more about atmosphere, the dark, gloomy mood and a lot of it is dark stuff. In my opinion, Death metal is more about screaming but still being audible and more about the music itself. I think it's great if you like that stuff, I think the amount of work that goes into the music is so much more than the average crap I hear on the radio.
My main problem got to be that I couldn't always seperate myself from the music, a lot of it is depressing stuff and to say it doesn't effect you at all, you're lying to yourself. Of course you can say that it might not effect you to the same extent as someone else but reguardless, it still has an effect. This is why I've balanced out my music selection to be mostly other stuff and then some metal.

so just wondering then to those who listen to death or black metal that arent satanists. What attracts you to those genres. Is it to let loose some energy or you like how a person in the band plays the instruments?
koliare: that really is an interesting combination, a jehovah witness listening to black/death metal.
mrJotaan: what religion are you if you're not a satanist?
Yes i completely agree with music affecting you. But i think if you don't pay attention to lyrics usually (like me) it doesnt bother a person as much, although the mood that is set up by the instruments can also contribute. If you're a teenager, you also tend to listen to stuff like this to "stick it to the man" so to speak. but yeah generally music does influence a person. It reminds me of this Wishbone episode (tv show on pbs) where they experimented by putting dramatic music with some tense scene and it fit really well with giving that sort of urgency, but when it was replaced with circus music, it felt comical. needless to say, i rant.

Nice! I used to watch wishbone a long time ago. I'm actually Christian which is even weirder, taking in all that stuff and trying to not let it effect me. Even if you were to not pay attention to the lyrics, subconciously you pick it up so I'm not sure how much it helps. I just found out about a new plugin for winamp and other media players that let you turn off the lyrics and just listen to the music which is awesome. What attracts me to the music is the energy put into the music, the instruments and the styles used. The thing that got me really into black metal for a while was the blast beats and double bass drums, I love how Nick from Dimmu Borgir plays his drum set, he's really fast and he has good variation. I mostly got into heavy metal because of the guitar playing and the solos.
Seriously, out of all the people I know who listen to black/death metal, none of them are satanists, they have satanist ideals to a small degree but they don't believe in Satan so it's not an issue for them.

I am Mormon and the lyrics in a most of the death metal and black metal dont bother me. I dont listen to it for the lyrics, I listen to the guitars and drums. The only time the singing bothers me is when its screaming and distracts from or over powers the guitar.
Oh, and I can't believe you guys watched Wishbone...
