I talked to psi about it and he said he's too busy at the moment with marriage and stuff. He did tell me he doesn't like the idea of yet another place for people to talk in but said he has some ideas of his own that he'd like to test out. Great stuff too, give it a few months and maybe we'll see something, it's in the backburner right now.

Then use IRC, grab a copy of hydraIRC (free), and hop on irc.irchhighway.net what you see there will be EXACTLY what you see if I tried to put a chat room in the forum.Libaax wrote:I dont see why he doesnt like it cause for us europeans it feels like talking to yourself in the forums cause when we write the rest of regurals arent online cause of the time diffrence.
I wouldn't mind chatting with any of you on any program at all, but sometimes I hardly make a response though, you'd be lucky if I could even be bothered to type a proper response or continue the course of the conversation. Trivia kept my fingers warm though. I could see some flaws in the chat room, namely the time zone differences. It's a good idea, but I don't know how it's going to work.
Psi, isn't there a java type based IRC thingy that people who have no knowledge on IRC can use? I don't know much about it, but I know it exists. That could serve as a chatroom.

That was what I was talking about, the chat would be nothing more than IRC, so getting hydraIRC or another free client will give you the same material andmore functionality than just a embedded IRC client in the forums. Also, another problem is that i hate iFrames, that is the only way to keep the IRC client in the same browser window while everyone uses the forum.Eldo wrote:Psi, isn't there a java type based IRC thingy that people who have no knowledge on IRC can use? It is an unnecessary hack, and ugly, and if I use IRC with a stand alone-client I think others should to.
Then... whats the point of having an IRC chat?Libaax wrote:Yeah but the diffrence being you will chat with EG member if there was a mindwerk chat off irc since most of the members in the forums dont hang out in IRC.
To me it is pointless, an excercise in futility. Just get a hydraIRC if you want to hop onto IRC and chat with other EG people @ #[Evil_Genius].
If you haven't noticed, i'm biased on IRC, because I was on Undernet back in 1996 through 1999. Lets just say, right now.. i use it only to talk with those who don't use IM. It serves no other purpose for me now. I spend more time in the forums and have no pressing desire to be on IRC.
Another big point is the FACT that if I put chat stuff on here, then people will chat and not post in the forum. The two mediums need to be seperate.
I'd like to think people log in IRC just to see my name and bask in the warmth emitted from my presence. I'm that interesting and sex-ay.
/me goes back to doing nothing.

I like the clean layout of a forum more than trying to integrate something else not forum related into the layout.Femto wrote:A browser based chatroom would be more accesible for members, that's it really. I wouldn't bother with opening a separate IRC program and logging in and whatnot, but if there's a chatroom that's integrated into the forums, then I'll be there for sure.
The other solution is to offer something like http://irc.mindwerks.net/ and what that could do is offer that java based irc client, and have it auto-magically goto #[Evil_Genius] or even #mindwerks the problem is that using the web-based one you don't have access to the IRC bots for XDCC packs. you need a real irc client for that stuff. It would ONLY be for chatting. Another problem is that if you didn't register your nick, then you would be doomed to wear the moniker of Guest9234234(wtf ever long random number).
That means more n00b questions like 'why can't I download from bots' or 'how do I register'.
I didnt want an IRC chat.
But you are right we cant have chatroom here then people wouldn post.
If the chatroom was in another site, then people could go there when the forums is dead instead of just spamming.

That's why I liked the idea of phpMyChat (http://phpmychat.sourceforge.net/rubriq ... ubrique=29). Remember that forum I linked you to when I first suggested the idea? Take a look of how it works there:psi29a wrote:I like the clean layout of a forum more than trying to integrate something else not forum related into the layout.

On that site, you have to be registered on the forums to access the chat room and it uses the forum's usernames. There wouldn't be XDCC or anything ilke that, it'd be stricly for chatting, but people that get releases in a certain way won't change their methods all of a sudden. If somebody uses IRC for downloads, then they are already used to how it works and have a separate program set for it. In the same manner, somebody that uses Bittorrent won't switch to IRC just because there's a chatroom now. In other words, XDCC wouldn't be necessary in the chatroom and there wouldn't be n00bs because Guests wouldn't be allowed.
But then there's that bandwidth issue you mentioned.
the bandwidth issue does bother me, not sure how that will work out.
I have found this, and might entertain the idea of implimenting it.

apparently there is a way to integrate it into phpBB which is hella nice. A lot of work though, I have to edit 60+ files it seems, yikes!
Here is a quick and dirty way to do chat without leaving your browser...

I'm by no means done, but its a start. With the mods for phpBB above, I can integrate it so you don't have to change your nick each time you log in.

that is kinda retarded in my opinion, if you are going to chat, then chat via IRC... if you are going to use a forum, then use a forum. I don't like phpMyChat, waste of bandwidth. However, the java based IRC client isn't that bad of an idea and I've implimented it above. http://irc.mindwerks.net/ later, I can work on getting it integrated into phpBB without effecting the 'looks' of the forum, but still allow you to log in with your name and profile intact.LordMune wrote:Hey, neat. EDIT: Same old dram4 as before I suppose. We need a proper forum-only chat.
