Manga recommendation: Akira

Post by Trog »

AKIRA the 6 volume manga classic by Katsuhiro Otomo is one of the best mangas ever; it's a masterpiece in story and art.

I'm posting this cause I think many mangareaders that have only seen the anime and think the anime and manga are approximately the same  , so there's no need to read it.

If you're one of the target people, prepare to be educated:
The story of the Akira manga is completely different from the anime's story.
The first volume somewhat similar to the first 2/3 of the anime, but later the story of the manga develops in a completely different direction.

So if you're not yet familiar with it you really should check it out. It's really good and might be concidered a required reading for mangareaders.

The manga story is much better then the anime's.

Contains spoilers:
The events in the first volume have some similarity to the anime up to the point where Tetsuo finds the place where Akira is contained. From then on (the next 5 volumes) the story is different from the animes. For example Akira is still alive and the last three books take place in the post apocalyptic setting of the ruins of neo-Tokyo after the second Akria phenomenon.

Initially I didn't like his drawings either. A lot of his characters look like dwarfs with huge foreheads (and I'm not talking about the psychic ones).
But a lot is compensated by the artful way he presents the scenery. And after some reading I really got used to the character design. (In fact the way Tetsuo is presented in the later books made him one of my favorite manga characters)

As to the "story" of the movie, yes there is next to nothing. Like I said in my previous posts, most of what happens in the movie is just a prelude to what happens in the real Akira storyline.

Do you really think that's a good idea? I think it's better to start a new thread, since it would be impossible to discuss a manga recommended in this thread without getting in the way of the next recommendation.

I understood what you wanted. Like I said, I don't think that kind of thread is a good idea. You see if people start posting all their recommendations in one thread, and others feel like commenting on recommended manga, it's bound to become very chaotic.

do you need a reason to bump a tread if it adds to the tread?

I agree.
I'm not quite sure if agreeing to Trog's comment he made 4 months ago contributes to the thread. Saying 'I agree' does not mean shit all, if you do not provoke conversation or offer enlightenment to the dead thread, leave it alone. Only necro if you REALLY have something to offer. Otherwise, stay quiet and post in other threads. That is not a really legitimate answer for 'contributing to the thread', if it is, then I'll bump half a dozen dead threads and adding 'I agree' as my post.
