Well, my finals for some of my classes are worth 40% of my grade, so I feel some of the pain. In those classes (Mainly math) the first exam is worth 25%, the second is 35% and final is worth 40%. The only thing homework and quizes do is rasie or lower a grade by a third.
What are APs? o_O
You funny Americans. Exams are over (for universities anyway) I've even gotten most of my marks back.
And even in high school, I never had an exam less than 30% of my mark. What's the point of a final if it can't break you? Especially considering university finals are worth anywhere from 40-80% of your mark.

AP stands for Advanced Placement. Basically really smart high school seniors who are ready willing and able to do college level work. Most of the time it is done senior year, but for some reason (I think due to the time in school which regular US history is done) AP US History can be taken as a Sophomore. The classes are taught by high school teachers, and are done to be equivalent to a freshman college level class. Near the end of the college semester, the AP students take the AP test, a nation wide standardized test. Grades of 1-5 are given out (1 being lowest, 5 highest). And colleges can accept credits for students who have gotten good enough grades of AP tests. They automatically give that person credit if their score is high enough. Most colleges accept 3's for credit, but some (like mineEllen wrote:What are APs? o_O

I took 3 AP tests: AP US History, AP Spanish, and AP Literature and Composition (AP English). I got a 3 in History a 3 in English, and a 1 in Spanish (In my defense, the test was SUPER hard. There was a guy in our class who hard transferred the past year from Argentina where he had lived all his life and he said it was really hard for him). So there you go.

No. Not at all. They help if you want to get into a really good university, or any university for that matter. Even just taking the AP course looks good on a college application. You don't have to take the AP tests themselves. They won't affect your grade in the class itself because it's still a high school class. One of my teachers made the deal that whoever took the AP test would get an automatic 100% on the next test we took in the class. I've heard teachers say that colleges sometimes think higher of C+'s and B's in an AP class than an A in the regular version of the course.Ellen wrote:Are the APs mandatory to apply for college?
Also, if you get good enough grades on that and/or placement tests, you can skip certain "first-year" classes and take higher level classes sooner.
Yup, but don't be fooled. AP classes are a shitload of work and way different from regular Highschool classes. I'm currently a Junior and I'm currently taking AP Biology, US History, and English. In my school, some AP Classes range for one full year while some two.
Just in my opinion, the Science classes are much more work. However, they are much more intersting than any History or Literature. But thats just me.
