I'm pretty sure they are making up most of it as they go. I mean they have some key events and people to work with (Clark, Lex, Lana, etc.) and they rest the writers there just come up with.

Pffft. Neither I nor any human on Earth is hardass enough to come even close to being able to pull off a good re-creation of Gutts (For a cosplayer, it's good, but come on, look at his competition, also the fact that he is Asian doesn't help me believe he's Gutts).
