The Man Who Saved the World

Post by Southpaw »

Apparently the world almost went up in nuclear holocaust in 1983. All because of some glitches in Soviet Russia's doomsday computers.

Check it out at http://www.mosnews.com/feature/2004/05/21/petrov.shtml

It freaked me out a little. I wasn't born till 1984, so yeah that saved my life.

Well, it didn't really save your life because you were not born yet.

In any case, that is a very uplifting, and a little scary, story. Thanks for the link.

Dont know if "The Man who Saved the World" is the same as "The Man who Could Start WWIII"

Either way, if he had pushed the button, wouldn't he just have destroyed the US?
The US is not the entire world (although they seem to believe that) :D

It would not have been just the U.S. We had people over here that did the same thing as him. Also an soviet retaliatory strike would have hit all NATO countries which is pretty much all of western Europe. So if he pushed the button and sent what he thought was a retaliatory strike then his American and NATO opposites would have launched a nuclear retaliation.

Which ends up with one hell of a lot of nuclear fallout landing all over the world and frying one hell of a lot of people. Anyone who didn't fry then gets to enjoy trying to survive nuclear winter. So yeah basically the whole world was at stake.

As far as starting WW3 he very well could have but the point is he DIDN'T.

That’s right, b/c he was an intelligent man, the man for the job.

Ah, all this talk of Mutually Assured Destruction makes me think of Metal Gear.

Here's a possible scenario:

a) Russia bombs US. US retaliates.
b) Allies support their alliance with country. The world gets involved.
c) After the whole war, the world would be reduced to wasteland. It'll be like Fallout.

The same situation can happen today if one of the major countries get outta line, so don't dismiss it as rubbish.

*Cracks Knuckles*

Sorry Eldo, that is not a possible scenario. Russia stopped using bombers as a nuclear delivery system in the 1970's. They switched over to strategic rockets as their delivery system of choice. Whether they are on SSBN's hardened missile fields, or mobile tractors all Russian strategic nuclear weapons are rocket based.

Besides at this point I doubt Russia has any functioning strategic weapons. If they do they are almost assuredly aimed at either China or North Korea.

Nah the bigger fault was the part where you said Russia. See I might have accepted North Korea or China, but thats still stretching it though.

Heh, yeah. That was my bad. I was referring to the scenario that the countries armed with the weapons will blow each other to shreds if one of them makes the first move. If just one of them blows up shit in the other country that is. That's a big IF on my part though, heh.

Just read that a few minutes ago. Scary shit. Kinda makes me wonder if this guy's computer system asked him if he wanted to play a game of Tic-Tac-Toe?

LOL there are no north koreans on the board! they dont have computers cuz they're all broke! they spent all their damn money buying nukes until they had no money left and said "oh gee, i shouldve saved some money to buy a launch site"

oh and thanks, i made the sig myself! it was one of my favorite moments in Bleach, seeing my favorite captain call out the coolest soul cutter in soul society!

O yeah I gorget the feelings that the North and South share. My friends from the services that have been to the DMZ say its a good time. You know they spend their leave at the DMZ yelling at the otherside.

they also tease with the borderlines between north and south korea. the dare would be to take one step into the other side. unfortunately, not everyone survives that dare
