Maybe some of you guys can help me out. I have an Abit Al8 motherboard
http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/pro ... &model=281 with integrated sound. I recently switched from XP to Media Center thinking I could hook it up to a 360 when I get one. Problem is now that I have MC installed it says I dont have a sound device, I tried reinstalling the drivers for it and even manually installing the device and nothing seems to work. Everything else is great, I just dont have sound. Any ideas?
Oh, and it wont let me reinstall
my copy of XP.

This is coming from an uneducated bastard, but did you try updating your chipset? Usually that has some correlation to your onboard sound.
As for not allowing you to reinstall your XP, what does it say when you insert the CD? Is it pirated?
Have you tried looking around your MB's website, and trying out those drivers? Or the website that supports said drivers? (i.e. I would go to Nvidia to update my NForce2 chipset. From what I can read, your's is intel?)
Have you checked your sound taskbar icon to see if it's simply set on the lowest setting? (The little gray circle.) Or going into Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices - to see if it's set on mute / low.
Or try the Run command > dxdiag.exe and seeing if your computer is even registering your sound driver as functioning or otherwise?
There are also ways via Floppy, maybe USB to wipe out a hard drive if you're desperate, but I don't advise doing so unless it's necessary.
Also, you may consider getting a sound card. If it's reliable, it may help ease the load on your CPU and/or motherboard.
Again, these are only assumptions, based on situational experience. You might be better off waiting for an educated bastard to comment.

Have you tried going into your BIOS? When installing MC perhaps it turned your onboard sound/devices off?

MC is not the same as XP when drivers are concerned, there will be drivers specific towards MC from your motherboard vender, at least hopefully. There are hacks around using XP drivers, but perhaps someone more knowledgable than I can help in that area.
I suggest you google your motherboard, drivers, and MC and see if anyone else is having the same problems you are.
The OS (xp or MC) should not touch the bios, so checking it would probably been far down on my list of things to check but you never know.
