Reminds me of an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Basically a guy was molesting his apopted son for years but the government was looking the other way/covering for him because he could apparently target missiles with like pinpoint accurcay and was crucial in Desert Storm.

I remember that. The question here really is, "Did Homeland Security know of these actions prior to this arrest?"

Think about it. Have you ever gone to a website that no one would ever know about? I'm not talking things like pornography and the lot of 'socially deviant' behavior. Most people would have no clue that I frequent Ars Technica unless explicitly asked. It's a bit harder, albeit possible, through extensive background (invasion of privacy?) checks now-a-days to check out these sorts of things. I can't imagine they could catch everything.

Something that disturbs me a bit in the article is that it is alleged that he's been having sexually explicit conversations since March 14th. The arrest was made on (I have to assume here) April 5th. While I'm sure by now we've figured out he hasn't - what if he was having conversations with other, real girls? What if he made a move?

I Googled around for a while and couldn't find the actual law in play here. I'm curious as to what exactly the police need to make a move. If we need 5 conversations (kind of winging it here), why?
