How to make an animated gif ...

If your name is Starnum and you have an elven fetish, you just opened up you birthday present!!! :worship:

There are a variety of ways to make animated gifs from video files. I only truely know one or two ways.

This is how I do it.

First, you need two programs. Virtual Dub and Adobe Photoshop (which comes with Adobe ImageReady).
Virtual Dub is free and you can get it HERE, while you have to "buy" photoshop.

Now, you take the video file that you want to make the gif from and open it in Virtual Dub. Then, use the slider and position it a little before the point where you want to start the gif. After that, click on the "Mark In" button which is the button on the left inside the red circle, if you look at the image below. Then move the slider to a little bit after the point in the video that you want to end the gif at and press the Mark Out button (the one on the right).

Now all you have to do is go to "File - Save Image Sequence ..." and set the destination for the images and set the file name prefix for them. What this will do is take the frames, from inside the selected area, and convert them into a bunch of jpeg files. So make sure you make a folder just for these files.

Once it's all done converting the images, close VirtualDub and open up the folder that you saved the images to. What you have to do is delete half of the files. The easy way to do this is to resize the folder if necessary to make the files appear in two vertical lines. Then highlight all the files on the right half and delete them. I do this to make the animation in the gif move at a relatively normal speed. If you had left them in, the gif would move rather sluggishly, plus it would double the size of the file.

Now you can finally open up ImageReady. In ImageReady, go to, 'File - Import - Folder as Frames ...' and select the folder that you had saved the images to. Now all that's left to do is to resize gif to whatever you want by going to "Image - Image Size ..." and save it. Make sure you select, "Save Opimized As ...". Saving normally, will not save the file as a gif.

Sometimes, when you save it, the file doesnt play fully. It may only go up to a certain frame and then stop. To rectify this, just slightly resize the image and save it again. That always works, though sometimes you have to resize a few times. An Voala, you have a perfectly retarded looking animated gif .... cuz it's your first time and you fucked up.

Easy way: There are some video files that you can open up directly in ImageReady. It only works for me when i open up .mov files. So if you can get that to work, it has a simple menu for making a selected segment of the video into an animated gif.

Happy Birthday Starnum!!

f) Signatures and Avatars: Keep them free of hardcore porn, if you have doubts, talk to a moderator. Signatures shouldn’t contain animated images over 512KB in size (exception would be Nazgul, because he is badass). Keep the signature equal to or below 600 pixels in width and 160 pixels in height. The avatar should be no bigger than 300 pixels in height and 150 pixels in width.
Lol, you like, broke every rule!

It's 3 times as big as the limit file size!!!

Other than that, it's a good.

Edit: Damien, that goes for you too. Your sig is too big .... sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I put up my own sig, though it's actually quite old.

Hm, I was worried about this. I thought there may be some contingency. It's so cool though, I can't use it? I could make it smaller, but I think it meets size reqs. I think it has quite a few frames, and I know it's a little over a meg in size...is that really bad? I mean, it's coming off of my site. Hm...*looks perplexed*

*He draws an alchemy circle and transmutes the gif, snapping his fingers at the end to bring the momentary space in time to shape.

Okay, I think that's pretty reasonable.

*He dusts his hands over and turns about.*

Back to the lab for another homonculus.

I reduced the colors in this gif and gotten rid of some frames. I think it looks quite the same, but the duration of the animation is slower. The file size is 370 kb overall.

Awesome work Star, good to see some Tenjou Tengue back on EG, if only in gif form. And props for using Masaktaka, he's probably my favorite character. Poor guy, the only girl who wants him is a freakin' middle schooler.

Yeah, tenten is great. It's a shame we don't have anyone who'd want to trans it. My favorite character is Mitsuomi, but this scene came to mind as something that might look nice in gif form. ;)

Awesome Masataka gif, he is my fav in TenTen that scene when he kicked Nagi's ass was my fav scene :)

I didn't like TenTen anime cause it was so much clichè specially about Nagi character. It would have been alot better if they cared about the other characters.

It's pretty damn cool, IMO. Well, until the ending, where they diverge from the manga. They just kind of ended it for some reason, and they didn't do a very good job at it. Other than that, it rocks.

What do you guys think about my sig?

I havent made it myself i found it in another forum.

I wonder it its okay to have a gif as a sig?

I know the rule say only Nazgul can a gif sig but i wonder it that rule is still the same?

Can someone make it a litle smaller for me? its too large. 180 instead 160 in hight.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. I was thinking of doing one of Sendo using "Precise Motion". We're allowed to have gifs in our sigs, they just have to meet certain size parameters. You can read more about it in the Forum Guidelines.

I have read the forum guidelines about 100 times.

Then you would know that the signature is supposed to be 160 pixels height.
