Bird Flue
I´m so fed up with all the talk about the bird flue.
Media is talking about it on daily basis now (In Sweden). People is actually getting really scared in that they might get this thing.
They are getting vaccinated against normal flue now too (Why? Cant really say why), perhaps they think they might get more resistent against all kinds off flue.
I read in one paper that its 4 times a bigger chance to get killed by a coconut in the head then getting the bird flue.
I bet the pharmacutical (Correct spelling?) industry is rubbing their hands in delightness over this whole thing (Gimme monies).
So what I´m aiming at is that it´s a bit over rated, there are more important matters going on in the world today that should be put in the center instead off this.

Sadly I think your right.
But still I cant get all those that actually get scared over it.
I mean, when they found two dead swanes (Or was it ducks??) in the middle off Sweden the news was all over it.
Some at my school got seriously freaked out about it.
Where saying things like "Oh my god. What are we gonna do now".
I dont know if I should laugh or cry when I hear people say things like that.

To be fair, a pandemic flu that crosses the species boundary between birds and humans is the stuff nightmares are made of.
The 1918 epidemic killed millions world wide, inflicting more death than the First World War. A bird human boundary jumper would defy all attempts at quarentine. It's ugly stuff.
That said, there is jack shit we can do. Spending time and money trying to protect yourself is like trying to shield your house from a meteor.

The flue is dangerous that we know but the media is making out to be like it gonna destroy world or something.
If it starts killing people here im sure there is time to buy what you need to protect yourself and hope for the best.

I now also read that al of the scandinavian countries are thinking off making our very own vaccin, but it will not be ready in time.
However I dont really know what they mean by saying so. Do they expect the flue to come when the birds start to move again?

It won't become anything as large as a pandemic until a situation occurs where someone with let's say the flu, gets the avian flu from the birds, and creates a mutated strain of the virus which could possibly be transferred easily between people through means such as physical contact, sneezing, coughing etc.
Right now you don't have much to worry about unless you're living in one of the areas with many deaths (last I heard anything big about this, it was mostly in Asia where larger numbers of people were dying) and you spend a large amount of time with these birds everyday. Mostly chicken farmers, or those who live in villages where being aroung chickens is a part of everyday life.
There's a large hype in Canada as well, because people have begun buying up the drug Tamiflu (it's not completely effective against the Avain Flu, and stands a good chance of not working at all if it mutates) in a way of safeguarding themselves should something happen. The only problem then is that only one drug company has the rights to produce Tamiflu, and at this point isn't making it available for other drug companies to mass produce them for the general populace.

Well in Sweden right now they´ve said that the meds they have right now isnt enough for everyone to go around (Like I even want it) so government is putting togheter a list off people that they will hand out the meds too.newbified wrote: There's a large hype in Canada as well, because people have begun buying up the drug Tamiflu (it's not completely effective against the Avain Flu, and stands a good chance of not working at all if it mutates) in a way of safeguarding themselves should something happen. Ok, well genetic mutation isn't like chemistry where you have to mix two viruses together to get a different one, but your point stands.newbified wrote:It won't become anything as large as a pandemic until a situation occurs where someone with let's say the flu, gets the avian flu from the birds, and creates a mutated strain of the virus which could possibly be transferred easily between people through means such as physical contact, sneezing, coughing etc.
There are a LOT of "ifs" in this senario.
1 - IF the avian flu mutates to be transmissable easily to humans AND
2 - IF the mutated version also has a human vector (i.e. I can give it to you) AND
3 - IF the mutated version is still seriously dangerous to humans
Then we might have a pandemic on our hands, but only if the mutation manages to transmit itself more effectively than the existing strain.
Now that all sounds like you'd have a billion or so years to get ready, but remember that viruses go through generations in seconds rather than years... so a mutation is possible - but still unlikely.

Pure bullshit. Never believed in it, but I remember the big hysterical drama about it. Like all computer were gonna explode or something.MrFelony wrote:were you in a cave between 1999 and 2001? it was a huge scare that all the computers were going to crash when the year 2000 hit because they werent programmed for that year and subsequently the nukes would be launched or someshit like that...basically apocalypse
