Sony v. Bilzzard

Bilzzard has (apparently) a fairly clever peice of software called "The Warden" that snoops your system while you play World of Warcraft.

Sony BMG has been distributing a rootkit on several of its latest CDs that masks processes prefixed with $sys$ in order to run some stuff to keep you from copying their music.

Some clever individual put two and two together and realized that if you prefix your cheats on WoW with $sys$ and let Sony install its stupid rootkit.... the Warden won't catch you.

This is why DRM is a mindnumbingly stupid idea.

Now, not only is Blizzard out god knows how much they spent on The Warden, but everyone who's popped one of those Sony CDs into their system has a security hole you could drive a truck through.

Sigh....

Here's the article

malware + malware + sploitz = profit

That equation doesn't sound right. Really, Sony has no business messing with Windows, and neither has Blizzard playing the old spy game.

i never cared about the WoW one, a hash program that searched the title lines of open windows to see if they are the same as the BOTS. Was better at keeping bots out then lineage 2 was.

Honestly, the Warden idea was blown out of proportion anyway.

The original article that labeled the Warden as "spyware" was written by a well known code hacker who had designed hacks for several Blizzard games. After the original article he recieved so many e-mails that he had to recant many of his statments about exactly what the program did.

As well Blizzard has every right in the world to "play the old spy game" as it's their piece of software and their intellectual property they are trying to protect. It's honestly not Blizzard's fault if players don't feel like reading the EULA and ToS after each update patch. As the Warden is clearly discussed in the contracts you have to accept before playing their game.

But honestly, the ingenious of the people who design these hakcs, and rip CD's, is never to be underestimated. No matter what obstacles seem to be put in front, they'll find ways around.

If this particular rant is directed at me, as it appears, let me say this in my defence; I have no clue what I'm talking about. I don't play WoW, I took what was stated at face value.

Read it, too. And today I started playing WoW and I don't really care as long as they don't do anything but check for hacks, like sending info about what programs I'm also running. I don't really like it but as long as it stays secure.

Where did you start Necro? If it's the same server I'm currently leveling my Druid on I could help you out. Probably get you an invite to the guild I'm in. They're quite active for once you hit 60. They do quite a bit of MC and other high end instances.

Blackrock's horrible =X. You've got it setup as the unofficial Oceania server, so it's full to the brim of players and often times has large queues and lag :P.

I just noticed that Necromancer's from Germany though so there's a better chance that he plays the European version...

I'm playing on a german server because some friends are on there so I don't think it's yours. Maybe I'll join one on which you are later (got both US and EU Client) but atm. I want to get my char on this one up. Lvl 20 after 4 days, and I'm working half of the day, hehe.
