You know that telling people to shut up on a forum is kinda... futile?Femto wrote:You haven't played 3rd Strike.
Shut up now.
And how many of those games are you actually good at?
Anyway yeah I never played 3rd Strike. Is it that much different than any Streetfighter before it?
And yeah, I am good at most of the Fighting games I played and enjoyed. Obviously I am/was better at the ones I liked most. Soul Calibur, Killer Instinct, etc.

I'm no expert at Street Fighter 3, but this clip makes it one of the best fighiting games in my opinion, 2d or not 2d.

Gives me chills everytime.
Thats a custom combo that each move has to be blocked individually.
Arguing about which game is better is pointless. Some people just won't budge, no matter if they're wrong.

I never get tired of watching that clip, but I prefer the full fight clip because you don't have that damn frame in the middle of the fight:

I'll try and be civil.Femto wrote:That wasn't your point at all.The Prince wrote:My point was....What is the point of getting a fighting game, that your friends are unfamilar with?
You were rambling about nonsense and the game's popularity.
Let me spell it out for you.....
Popularity plays a role in choice of games people play, especially when it comes to fighters. When the vast majority of time playing a game is spent playing with/against friends, the popular choice among friends can certainly have influence on what game you find yourself playing.
So at a time of no online option, investing money and time into a fighting game that no one around you plays, doesn't make a lot of sense for me.
But perhaps in your case, playing with yourself is a personal preference, and that constitutes the entirety of your experience. To each his own......

So although my perspective may not apply to people like you, try and be a little more open-minded.

In regards to those comments, I may have been out of line.Femto wrote:lol @ calling people nerds in the video game section of a scanlation forum

That video shows pretty much everything I don't like about 2D fighters. You just cannot use your surroundings to your advantage, dodging around your opponent, striking them from the sides and sidestepping, etc. When it comes to martial arts or fighting in general I always adored Jackie Chans style of using his surroundings to the best, maybe that's where my fighting preference comes from.lon3vvolf wrote:I'm no expert at Street Fighter 3, but this clip makes it one of the best fighiting games in my opinion, 2d or not 2d.

Also I don't dig the concepts of fireballs and the such. Why still fight with your fists if you can summon balls of ki?

Re: Street Fighter IV!!!!
I've just been browsing this thread for a bit, and just wanted to say that although 2D and 3D fighters are of the fighter genre, they are not the same as many people mentioned before. This is like comparing Zelda with Final Fantasy, whilst both RPGs, they're different types of games. Apples and pears.
quote="Aetherfukz"]That video shows pretty much everything I don't like about 2D fighters. I personally like Street Fighter 3rd Strike better than Soulcalibur. Sure, using the surroundings is fun, but the action is more intense and confrontational in 2D than say, rolling away to the side in safety in 3D fighters. It's not about the realism in the fighting games, it's about the intensity and fun for me. I have to say though, most people who are good at 3D fighters absolutely suck at 2D, which seem to be one of the reasons why 3D guys dislike it.
However, the popularity of the name, ultimately, results in nothing if the game is terrible. Take the latest 'installment' of SoulCalibur for the Wii as an example, it's such a horrid game that I wished it never existed. The popularity of a brand of product has nothing on the quality of the game. The game's popularity builds based on the quality, not the other way around.

Because fireballs don't deal as much damage as combos. A fireball doesn't connect very well into multiple hit combos. Also, when a fireball is done, there is an opening in which the opponent can take advantage of and turn the tide of the battle. Could you imagine how bad a person's arse could be kicked if they only did fireballs?Aetherfukz wrote:Also I don't dig the concepts of fireballs and the such. The name Street Fighter isn't exactly unpopular. In fact, I would say that it's much more renowned internationally than the other games like King Of Fighters, SoulCalibur, Tekken, etc. To clarify, for example, if I mentioned the words 'Street Fighter' to a non-gamer, it is much more recognisible than the other games of the same genre. The Street Fighter hysteria was so huge that it was referenced throughout culture, such as movies, music, etc. The others...not so much or at that level. The Prince wrote:Popularity plays a role in choice of games people play, especially when it comes to fighters. Uh...what? So the games in your possession are like party games? Street Fighter isn't exactly Mario Party. Fighting games aren't necessarily meant for party or multiplayer-type games. Of course, playing with a mate is more fun, but there's nothing wrong with playing against the computer. Fighting games were not primarily designed for multiplayer action, much like First Person Shooters genres aren't either. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me that you're buying games for yourself for the purpose of having everyone around you play with you. I play games for my own personal enjoyment, and not to see the look of other people's faces. The Prince wrote:So at a time of no online option, investing money and time into a fighting game that no one around you plays, doesn't make a lot of sense for me.
I thought you were joking at first. It's decent and alright and good fun, but not exactly the 'best' fighting series out there. The Prince wrote:The Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi games are the best fighting series out there at the moment.

Re: Street Fighter IV!!!!
-I was joking about the Dragon Ball thing....but it actually is pretty fun. And I'm sure fans of the series get more out of it than those looking for a pure fighting game. But there are aspects of the game that are unique....just not my cup of tea.
-Wasn't exactly saying that fighters are party games in the typical sense. Only that these are games that I much prefer to play against other people, as opposed to just the computer. Not to say I don't enjoy playing with the computer, but playing the computer quickly loses its luster, where eventually you find yourself exploiting the AI and its repetitive tendencies. Perhaps in the coming years AI will improve to the point where that may not be that much an issue, but with online play available such things become a non-issue.
-During my peak playing days, amongst my circle of friends, it always came down to the latest versions of Tekken, SC, and Fight Night. But I don't want to sound like I was settling because I found these games to be awesome, and wouldn't have played them hours on end if I thought otherwise.
-I'm sure there are large circles of people who swear by SF3, I just haven't been exposed to them. But going by strictly sales, in terms of fighters, here in the states games like Soul Calibur and Tekken dominate the market. Of course that doesn't mean there are not better fighters out there. In an analogy I made earlier, before EA signed their exclusive contract with the NFL, NFL2K was considered across the board as a much better game than Madden, but this didn't stop Madden from destroying 2K in terms of sales.
-With the exception of the DOA franchise (never got into these games), only until recently have these games been available for online play. Now with online capability that changes everything, as whatever your preference, there will always be players available to play. In that sense, what I said earlier doesn't really apply anymore.
-OH and BTW when it comes to Soul Calibur I'm a fighting genius. Yet I always sucked at SF and always will......that's why Soul Calibur is a superior game.

That's all fine and well but it has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of a game, which is what was being discussed here before you went on this tangent for no reason. The Prince wrote:I'll try and be civil.

Sucks that you don't have any friends that play Street Fighter, I guess.
And "using your surroundings" in Soul Calibur and most 3D fightings games (except DOA, I guess) is limited to nothing but ring outs.
Side-stepping has nothing with surroundings, it kinda works like rolling in KOF.
Maybe this guy means positioning but that's also vital in Street Fighter games.
And yes, the gameplay jump from Super Turbo to 3rd Strike is huge.

14 pages on egm talking about sf4 on their newest issue.
weird part is that they said no more airblocking, but there is a pic of ryu clearly airblocking ken's shoryuken.

I read the article and I've heard about the air-blocking issue and, again, I don't understand how people could even tell at this point.halfnhalf wrote:weird part is that they said no more airblocking, but there is a pic of ryu clearly airblocking ken's shoryuken.
I mean, have people somehow seen Ryu's air-blocking animation already and know it well enough that they can pick up a single frame of it from a screenshot?
Re: Street Fighter IV!!!!
Yeah, I could probably nail that.Femto wrote: I mean, have people somehow seen Ryu's air-blocking animation already and know it well enough that they can pick up a single frame of it from a screenshot?

Seriously though, we know what an air-block looks like, and I find it hard to believe there won't be one. I guess we'll have to wait and see, but that'd be retarded if there wasn't. I mean, I know there hasn't always been air-blocking, but I like it, and geez, the guys are martial-arts masters. I think they can block in mid-ar, heh, at least some of the time. You know, depending on the situation. Who knows though, they might totally botch that. Can't wait to see.

No, he isn't.halfnhalf wrote:no honestly, if you look at the picture, he is airblocking.
If anything, it looks like he's in the middle of doing his jumping jab from 3rd Strike:

I'm wondering, have the people that are obsessing over this completely pointless and trivial stupidity even played these games?
I haven't played Alpha in years but I'm pretty sure when Ryu airblocks in that game he pulls his knees closer to his face, which looks nothing like the pose in that EGM scan.
Airblocking sucks either way.
EDIT:

Yup.
Definitely looks like a jumping jab.
His airblock looks completely different.

Yeah, I wouldn't call that an air-block either. Isn't there like a flash, like there's a barrier, when they air-block?

Well, the game is pretty incomplete at this point so I doubt they have all the proper hit sparks in.
That pose just doesn't look like an airblock pose at all.

More screen shots out. Theres some 'sparks' but nothing too overly done. The pic with Ken about to punch Ryu in the nuts... Now if they showed some other characters!

I also believe that wasn't an air block too, just throwing my 2 cents in there.

Re: Street Fighter IV!!!!
So no parry, but something that will do the same thing? Seems more like a combination of several abilities from different CvsSNK2 grooves. It sounds cool, but the demo doesn't show any of that, just the SF2 fighting in 3D.
