I think once Guts faces a true apostle-caliber enemy, even a summon from Schierke won't be a deciding factor in the outcome of the battle. In such cases, I think we can all look forward to some juicy moments of Guts back in teh spotlight.
If anything, now would almost be the perfect time for such an enemy to appear too, at least in terms of excitement and believability. Because Schierke is already spent, and if such a strong enemy actually appeared before everyone could get on the boat, the only one to stand in its way and buy time for the others to find and board the ship would be Guts. I am also still wondering how Ganushka will react, since Schierke has basically single-handedly crippled his invasion front, at least from the current look of things (and for that matter, how all this affects Griffith).
I think before they leave the city, guts and co. will still need to face that one pipe smoking (it was one of those arab/indian pipes, forgot the name for em) guy that was commanding all the kushan sorcerer type people in the invasion of the coast. I assume he was in command anyhow. They showed a panel or two in vol 29(?) with him in it noting that one of his animal enchanter groups didn't return and being surprised that there was anything nearby powerful enough to take one of them down.
I may be mistaken, but a boat like his is anchored in the harbor. I haven't gone back and investigated though.

I just wanted to point out that he used his crossbow in 265 and his cannon in 266. The crossbow was used before he came to the aid of those soldiers fighting the daka and the cannon was used to finish off the whale thing. So there.
And of course, thanks for the chapter guys. Excellent work as always

Well, if you consider how we couldn't get our hands on a raw until almost a week later, then it's actually still right on schedule (since 268 was printed on 1/27 and the next chapter is slated for 2/9, with the (un?)usual two-week gap in between)
And thanks for pointing out the weapon cameos BigSassy. I think our lapse in memory regarding stuff like this is linked with our frustration at what seems for many to be a plodding pace in the last 20 chapters or so. A lot of people seem to be having trouble coping with the slower and sometimes sporadic release of the chapters, so they don't stay as fresh in their minds, and hence the feeling of dissatisfaction. Of course, there are also others who are simply dissatisfied with the whole magical focus in general. But good things come to those who wait, as they say.
Or how dumb the Daka are if they are just walking into his sword swings.
I'm still having trouble taking the Daka seriously. I know they're supposed to be stronger then any normal human (and I can believe with the tiger and whale like ones, at least) but Guts doesn't seem to have any more trouble with them then he does with normal humans, and that "weapon" they all use has to be about the stupidist thing I have ever seen, as well as almost totally impractical.
Using Guts as a measuring stick of the strength of what are essentially the pawns of this chess game is a poor way of comparison though. Guts also had no troble whatsoever with the thousands of trolls he slaughtered, and they would have likely posed some serious trouble to any normal human (soldier) too, especially given their numbers. The Daka are a host, a horde, and they are supposed to be more intimidating with their numbers than anything else.
But I agree that the emperor needs to show that he has some more creatures up his sleeve if he wants to take on Griffith though, otherwise he'd be both crazy and dumb. I really hope he's not crazy and dumb, that would be such an anticlimax. The whalelephant things and the tiger guys might give some of the apostles pause for like a second, but realistically any of those apostles would have no trouble with Ganushkas grunts, as we have seen with Locus and the Archer guy.
Edit: And bingo, big stuff comin through! Behold the chapter preview for the next chapter (titled something like "Sword Beast")

Fucking hawt. Berserk armour time.
I don't think half the toilet seats in the world are as clean as I should like; and only half of those are half as clean as they deserve. - tsubaimomo, July 26, 2010 3:00 am

ah so thats what happened there! i dont know how i missed that!
Another Whalelephant? I wonder if Guts had a chance to reload his cannon? Cause otherwise that could be a bit of a problem. Still, I want to know what ever happened to killing the sorcerers, not the grunts? For the last few chapters they've mostly just been killing the beasts (the only time they killed a sorcerer since entering the city, they had already pretty much wiped out the beasts he was commanding, and mostly Schierke hasn't even seemed to be looking), and I'd think they're the easier to replace of the two, given how long it takes to train a sorcerer.
I think we'll be seeing real soon where the sorcerers have been and what they were up to. But off the top of my head I would guess many of them were still on the invasion barges controlling the scenes. The only group that required that they go deeper in the city were the ones that attacked the ball and the one that went deeper into the city.
I also doubt that whalephant is the only one there. I'm betting Guts will really be pushed to his limits in the next chapters. It would be nice if he had to fight something that could talk back and think more for itself though.
I still sort of wonder if any of the Kushan sorcerers can do more then control the beast things. Maybe there could be one or two more versatile ones to engage Schierk in a spell dual? Or something to make us see them as a little impressive in and of themselves, not just in what they can control?
Hey hey heylow again guys!! Well, my comp's been dead ever since the chapter 265 and I just got it back up today (its a new one anyway) so its great to get all of these chapters at once!! Thanks Wandering Mystic and all of the EG crew for the continued bringing of the god nectar! ^_^ I was very gald to see Guts fighting off the armor again eventhough when he was purposefully going to use it I did get a little giddy. But then Shiercke (sp) came through and was completely badass!! W00t!!
That's right!! Another pointless post by me bitches!!! HA!
