( at this age of mine could you believe that I never had drink even a beer ) LMAO , and its true!
Funny thing is, (almost) neither did I! :D I actually did try beer (didn't like), red wine (blueberry juice better) and champagne which I have to drink at list a sip for formal family occasions, but non of these drinks can compare to green tea, ice tea, common water, lemonade or fruit juices :)

As for 'why?', I can only tell that I've never felt a need for alchocol. I am naturally cheerful so I don't need an endorphin boost most of the time, and I don't even like the idea that I have no control over my actions (like trying to seduce a gorgeous chick while dead drunk :D ). Maybe that depicts my inner insecurity, but I don't give a damn.

After lurking around here for at least.. I dunno, 1 year? 2? Since I´m a regular reader of Berserk (u can see some of my letters on the brazilian print of it)... And didn´t had anything worthable to say which hasn´t been said already by you guys, you drop the subject of alcohol and beers, lol.

Well.. I´ve started to drink this year. Coudn´t handle life anymore, without it.

my favs (and .. most expensive unfortunately :-( ), I highly recommend to anyone to try it out at least once in your lifetime.. :

England:
Newcastle Brown Ale, 4.7%(cans are the better ones)

Belgium:
(trappist) Chimay Rouge (Red), 7% ABV dubbel. (the only kind I´ve drank)
Duvel Strong Golden Ale, 33cl, 8.5% abv (the only kind I´ve drank)

Other than that.. I liked the Belgium Kwak, and a bunch of others.. well..

As for Wine.. French Cote´ du Rhone are a nice kind.

Err.. I sounded like a wierd excentric drunk freak now, and not a Berserk Geek. hehehe. Nice start for a post.

Alcohol is a depressant and has nothing to do with endorphins.

So why is then alchocol (in general) a drink of choice at parties, for example? It relaxes people, lets them break the barriers they built inside their heads, do crazy things and have a good time. Chemichaly speaking, alchocol may have nothing to do with endorphines, but it has much to do with the mood.

Depressant or not, it can sure make a person feel good...sometimes.
"To some it's a six-pack, to me it's a support group. Salvation in a can!" - Dave Howell

Its interesting though. There are stronger drinks out there, and better tasting drinks too, but Beer has probably had more of an impact on society than any other beverage. I'd bet more than than Wine and Coca Cola.
"Wine is but a single broth, ale is meat, drink and cloth." --English proverb
"Give me a woman who loves beer and I will conquer the world." --Kaiser Welhelm
"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day." --Frank Sinatra

and a personal favorite-Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

alcohol is a crutch for people to let loose their inhibitions. psychologically, people don't even need the alcohol to at drunk. its pretty easy to act fake drunk, or frunk as i've coined it. how many times have you seen people acting wasted when they haven't had anything to drink? i know on several occasions i've seen many a girl who had been tricked into drinking N/A beer or something acting wasted. i myself haven't drank for almost 2 years, but continued to party because, like aerial, I don't need alcohol to have shit loads of fun. and often times people need alcohol to catch up with my crazy self...

and as for alcohol being a depressant, the thing is it actually lifts your mood or w/e at first. so when you hit that buzz and are feeling good, thats when you shoudl stop or just sustain it, because after that the depressant side of it kicks in. i bet that most alcoholic drink makers could lower the proof and if they didn't tell anyone that not a whole lot of people would notice.

Imho, you can´t go wrong with a beverage which´s been consumed since ancient times.

If it exists until now, it´s like.. frankly, drugs (I don´t take them, but it doesn´t matter..).

But at the same time, it can be recognized as something absolutely indispensable to any society. Even old Natives, has their own typical alcoholic beverage, and something to smoke. Or , like those beers. Chimay is produced by monks :p

Like.. organized crime. Like the Yakuza or Mafia, the country which has it, depends on it. It makes the society working.

Problem is.. well, I concur about the dephressant part. If you dirnk too much, the "depressant" will kick in on the next day, always.

Endorphins are natural painkillers. Serotonin is linked to mood.

Alcohol is a depressant because it diminishes your vision, reaction time, thinking, etc.

I was 21 when I first got drunk and I hated it. But now I look forward to relaxing with the guys and a couple beers on the weekends.

Well, this is an interesting shift. From debating the relative merits of different alcoholic drinks, to debating the relative merits (or lack thereof) of alcohol in general.

Usually, drinking is to help you relax and loosen up. It removes some inhibitions...when I start to get mildly drink, I get extremely happy and start laughing and talk alot, not to jackass degrees though.

That's AeriEl, thank you very much. :D AeriAl is just one letter short of Disney's Little Mermaid, while Aeriel is a typo that should have been Ariel, the Wind God

Endorphins are natural painkillers but also control emotions such as happiness. When you laugh, your blood fills with endorphines. When you reach orgasm, your blood fills with endorphines.

wow so i come back to check on the status of berserk only to find you chumps talking about drinking? some of you havent even drank a drop of alcohol till you were 20+? ...
sorry guys but, newsflash, youve missed out on ALOT... i myself dont find alcohol to be that much of a "temptation"... id much rather smoke up than drink...
doing both, though, is sometimes just fugging crazy... couldnt drive some friends home after that night

for me, though, when i do decide to drink, beer is probably my alcohol of choice because its easier to maintain the buzz with beer than it is with hard liquor
the way i see it, its easy for people to condemn alcohol when:

1) theyve had a bad experience with it.. (especially people who have only drank ONCE in their lives) newsflash #2.. its an aquired taste meaning after drinking for a minimum of a couple of weeks (maybe less) youre going to enjoy it because you realize you dont drink alcohol for the taste (if you do youre fugging crazy) you drink it to get drunk (just like the song says)

2) youre a goody goody that stays away from all things considered to be "the tool of the devil" ("dont gimme that do-goody-good bullshit")

3) you think youre better than people that drink when the fact of the matter is neither one is better than the other... the only difference is one guy's drunk and the other guy's is high on life (hopefully)

dont take this shit personally... its all a matter of perceptions... if you seriously think that drinking is lame.. then dont do it...
but dont NOT do it because of some kind of self conscious dillemma... thats the worst way to talk yourself out of doing something that is QUITE enjoyable
if anything, drink when its appropriate and never turn down free alcohol... #1 sin of rookies
and DONT DRINK AND DRIVE...
peace chumps

That's exactly why I do or think , as for my main reason of why I chosed to never drink alcohol , its because I don't feel the need to do it , simple as that .

There's no need to play video games, read manga, or ride rollercoasters. It's just fun to do. It's the same way with drinking alcohol. :P

BTW, even at my damn near blind drunkest moments, I've never really forgotten anything. So I've never understood when people were like, "Ah man, I can't remember anything from last night." I don't know, maybe it effects people differently *shrugs*.

Well, my main reason for not drinking until I was 21 was because of my religion. I was raised thinking alcohol was bad, hell, they said coffee/tea was bad and a lot of people even said caffeinated soda was bad as well. They told me all the horrible things that could happen to me if I drank alcohol, plus the whole going to hell part. Then as a teen, when I started thinking for myself, I realized that a lot of their teaching just didnt make sense. Although I no longer had the religious beliefs, I still didnt drink alcohol for about 4 years. Mostly because there werent any opportunities, none of my friends drank and I am not much of a partier. Plus, our liquor store closes at 7pm.

If you have a good reason for not drinking, more power to you. But you cant say its 'just not your thing' if you have never tried it. Thats Bullshit. Maybe you've been around some asshole who was completely smashed and vomitting everywhere and decided thats not something you want to do. But if you are smart about drinking, I promise you will have a good time.

If they can have a good time without being drunk, let them be. I've had my best parties without being drunk, because I needed to drive back. It's absolutely wrong that you need alcohol to have a good time. Your only problem will be the drunks who will embarrass themselves at every turn without even noticing.

That being said of course being drunk is fun, but partying just for the sake of getting drunk is not something anyone should do. Getting drunk while partying is the way to go.

Well, my main reason for not drinking until I was 21 was because of my religion
I can understand that. Many religions are against mind altering substances from caffeine to LSD. Kinda glad i was raised Roman Catholic. I was offered my first shot of whiskey by my grandpa before i turned 12. :D it was all about the whiskey and wine.
And though that may be considered horrible by todays standards, it was that generation's way of life. And i don't see how anyone who accomplished as much as my grandpa, and had such a kind heart and good spirit could be considered wrong.
