Well, this is between the anime and the first 13 volumes of course. The rest of the manga has much more content, more good scenes, better Miura artwork, it will obviously be better overall but meh, whatever.
As for my full opinions? Well, the anime had two battle scenes that were not found in the manga, the one where Guts sees smoke and warns Griffith and the Hawks about it, and the battle where the Raiders have to cross a river to get into a fortress from behind to let the rest of the Hawks raid the castle from the front.
So they cut some stuff from the manga, so what? The only thing that I really miss in the TV series is the whole scene when Guts are Caska first get intimate. It was a very emotional scene in the manga, both characters open up completely to each other and it gives closure to that little "Don't you ever touch me!" subplot, something that is introduced in the series and left in the air. I guess the Donovan thing would be necessary for this to have full effect and it would've been nice if they added the whole born-from-corpse/Shishu thing.
Still though, I really think is better off without the rest of the stuff that was cut, for the most part at least. The whole Count thing was uneccesary IMO. It give some more personality to Guts, but it completely ruined the whole Griffith foreshadowing found in the TV series. One of the great things about the series is seeing how these two characters grow together and wondering what the hell is up with the Behelit and Griffith. The manga completely ruins it by giving you that information in a silver platter so early on. They cut the fight with Wylde off completely (what did we agree on for the spelling of this guy's name?), but I thought it was better to have Zodd be the only Apostle the Hawks meet in the Golden Age before stuff gets crazy in the Eclipse. By the time you actually get there in the series, it's almost out of your mind (though he does appear once before that), and the Eclipse is that much stronger thanks to that. Wylde (freakier than Zodd or Snake Baron too) appears right before it and it kinda cuts down on the shock value of seeing all those demons. It would've been idiotic to introduce Puck in the first episode and then leave him out for the rest of the series. Same with Skull Knight.
I think that about covers it as far as changes from manga to series go, but here's some other points about the TV series that I think work better in general:
-Music and Timing: Obviously. Whoever says that it's the same (or worse yet, better) to read a manga, at your own pace, with music playing in the background than seeing it and hearing it in unison as a TV series is talking straight out of their shit-hole. The music in animation is timed to the on-screen actions and it's not the same as reading a manga with music playing somewhere else, period. It can make seemingly mundane scenes more powerful, such as when the Hawks back down when fighting Boscogn and Griffith gives his encouragement speech. As far as timing goes, how about when Guts and Boscogn clash at the same time and it goes into slow motion as you hear the horses hooves running past each other as Guts and Boscogn settle? That's movie magic right there bitches and I flipped that same page in a second when I was reading it in the manga. Besides, how the fuck do you know what the mood of a scene is going to be so you know what kind of music you want to play when reading a manga?
-Mood: This is debatable, but I do think the TV series is darker. Sure, the manga is gorier and has more s3chs, but the tone of the TV series is more consistent than the manga, with the great use of browns and reds all over the place. The manga is black and white, so you could be visualizing neon colors if you want to. Also, the gh3y anime faces that pop up in the manga (Caska mostly during the Golden Age) completely ruin the mood. I know it's comic relief, but the TV series is much more consistent thanks to the lack of those.
-Artwork: Sure, Miura's work is very detailed, but it's pretty un-impressive until at least the 7th/8th volume. The TV series has almost zero animation, but some of the stills are just plain beautiful.
That's all from the top of my head. I'd have to think of other points.
Another Wyrm post... I hope at least some of you read it...

I read it and agree on what you say. When comparing the anime and the manga up to volum 13 , I'd also have to go with the anime. Its a shame they left out that part in the first intimate scene , I agree. Other than that I don't think anything more could have been shown. Perhaps Maybe the Skull Knight could have made an appearance , but than they would almost really be forced to make a second season.

Well I think they mainly left it out because child rape is not something they coudl put on TV. I also believe that is some of why Wyld was left out, but other then an amazing fight it brings nothing to the story. Also left out the king wanting to rape his daughter part. I woudl say that the anime was more consistant with its mood, because the manga is happy at times and then extremely dark at other times.
Stills were amazing in the anime. I loved the ending of the episode stills. Some of those were just amazing. The anime seems to have been done on a small budget, because they use alot of the lazy animation tactics, but the quality of the music and the story make up for it.

Man i hate this thread cause even the thought of comparing the best manga ever to the crappiest anime version of a manga ever is a disgrace!!!
I think you know how i'm gonna vote.
Man i cant believe you said the anime version is better than the first 13 vols of the manga who is the best part of the manga.

The art being one despite early vols of the manga are very old they still look much than the anime.
Also the characters don't like they do in the manga,i can understand the anime is old and stuff but i heard they changed Griffith looks on purpose.

Fuck the haters! The TV series is better than the first 13 volumes of the manga.
I don't want to write another Wyrm post about it (I've been doing that a lot lately), but it is. The addition of timing and music make certain scenes completely awesome as an animation, whereas the same scene generally falls short in the manga. Sure, it has an episode and a half of filler, and they removed some good scenes and gore, but most of the stuff in the series works better than in the manga.
Discuss.
EDIT: Total Votes : 1

Well I have rather a hard time choosing. Naturally the choice seems to want to go to the manga cause it is the original and has so much more. Only comparing the first 13 volumes with the 25 episodes I'd have to say the manga cause there was much introduced that just wasn't in the series.
I loved the the volume where they were chased by the Black Dog Army. That added so much to see Gatts defeat his first apostle imo. The anime did bring so much to life and really brought out parts that were important well but I just feel the anime shouldn't have changed the few things it did.
On a side note, what could possibly change this is if they continued the storyline and maybe redid the original series to include the missing and altered parts (just not all crappy George Lucas special edition style). Most importantly the scene I'd like to see translated into full motion more than any other would be the Hill of Swords scene with Griffith and the ensueing fight with Zodd. That is probably my favorite volume after volume 13.

I am going to have to say I enjoyed the anime more than the manga, hell I enjoy the anime more than the manga to this day. As Femto said in his long ass Wyrm post, anime just owns manga in capturing the mood. I said this before, but I will say it again, the rape scene when Femto has his way with Casca was far superior in the anime than it was in the manga. It was far more sensitive to the whole ordeal by muting Casca and just playing behelit in the back round with Guts in tears on the ground. The manga version to me seemed like overkill with the graphic nudity and what not, no emotion to it like the anime.
And I never thought of it, but you are right about the eclipse Femto. The whole event is far more of a shock than the manga, I mean the set up really makes you clueless to what could possibly happen, and it also puts more shock to Griffith's change from good guy to ultimate son of a bitch. After I finished watching the anime, I was convinced that Griffith was the ultimate antagonist because of the set up and how incredible of a leap his betrayal to his friends was.
Thank god for the spell check button, I would sound like a complete moron if it was not for that guy.

The manga dosent have the musik thats fantastic, but its still alot better(atleast i think), becuse the anime dont have all the original plot of the manga(that really sucks), and i have never really like anime as much as manga =P .
When the light is out, there will still be a Dark little shine out there(or will it?)
Haha... yea...
Well the one thing i liked better in the manga than the anime is when were going to rescue Griffith, the princess joined and they got attacked by the Bakiraka's. Hahaha i can't forget that now because she told them a story about king Gaiseric and then some people on DP had all these theories about it which lead to the stupid theories thread.
