typically the DM gives you roles to play, however if he allowed you to create your own, then you make it up. If he is a proper DM, he should give you rewards for making the game fun and enjoyable to not only himself but to the others as well. Either be yourself, or take on another persona and pretend to be that human fighter. Get drunk in taverns, tell tales, make shit up about how you had to scavage for rats to eat during the orcish horde invasion. Or talk about your ex-gf and how she wielded a +1 frying pan of doom at your thick skull, and thus you are at the tavern and far away from her enjoying a good games of bones and tall tankards of stout ale.
^_^ The goal is to have fun but be into the game at the same time.
PS: If I can get away with it, I play a Dwarven Cleric, dark chainmail and a big ass hammer and a drinking problem. I have to save vs. const or I go on a bender and end up miles away from my last remember location. Oh, and I'm a racist, I hate elves.

The only consistent character traits I have are a tendency to start bar fights without bothering to drink and hating elves. I think the elf-hating elf was the funniest role I have played or will...
