if i listen to songs i know too well i get distracted from the whole trance I'm in, so i actually don't listen to music a lot when I'm reading other comics. but berserk is special and so it gets music.

oh, and shojo, because it doesn't take a lot of focus. (so a completely different reason from berserk)

One word, Opeth.

When it comes to listening to music and reading anything, the music becomes something that drains out the background noise since I'm pretty much focusing on the text. However, I think it would be a good experience to read Berserk while listening to the Deftones, namely "Change (In the House of Flies)."
Oooh, I just thought of another good song to listen to: "Acid Rain," by Dream Theater. All instrumental rock with crazy good riffs.

I discovered "Squarepusher" (violent electro, kinda like Aphex twin and Autechre) when i was reading Berserk. It suits Gatsu's rage so much, almost like the musics were made properly for gats emotions... (but lots of music do the same :) )

I listen a lot of other things, but the resonance between the "mood" of the tracks and gatsu feelings/scenes is (at least for me and my best friend) insane.

Squarepusher tracks:
-Mess head (all of you got to listen the debut of this music, gatsu's rage)
-Tundra (express gatsu's loneliness for me)
-Squarewindow (express gatsu's sorrow for me)
-Up the gary
-Male pill part 6
-Etc...

Anyway, Berserk rules with music or not...

Alright first post, time to blow your minds away.

Read and listen to ...
Mushroomhead - Kill Tommorow

The Lyrics say it all.

Want to
We can if we want to
Lead you from behind you

Time will takes it's toll re-evaluate
The leeches and the lepers start to salivate
Truth is impaired cannot moderate
Tension escalates you cannot tolerate
Make you want to fly
Blind is the ambition that will navigate
Default by design the virus infiltrates
Corrupted and coerced the silence penetrates
Echoing the void now disintegrate

If you feel sometimes we're falling
Like we're falling away
I would not blame you
While you flow through my veins
Well we pay the price we pay
Kill tomorrow yesterday

Want to
We can if we want to

Leave it all behind it's time to walk away
A predator has a tendency to stalk their prey
With the dawning of the sun awakes another day
Desire that's required to play another game
Make you want to fly
Blame will point it's finger shed some light on fault
Around these memories we will build our wall
Install instant karma start restoring all
Focus on the rise and ignore the fall

If you feel sometimes we're falling
Like we're falling away
I would not blame you
While you flow through my veins
Well we pay the price we pay
Kill tomorrow yesterday

Want to
We can if we want to
Lead you from behind you
Make you want to fly

Time will takes it's toll re-evaluate
The leeches and the lepers start to salivate
Truth is impaired cannot moderate
Tension escalates you cannot tolerate
We can if we want to
Blind is the ambition that will navigate
Default by design the virus infiltrates
Corrupted and coerced the silence penetrates
Echoing the void now disintegrate

True, but their fanbase is growing. I'm going to see them in concert soon. Rock on!

Ahh, this is my kind of topic. I have to read Berserk under a certain mood setting. I find when I get thinking more deeply, I get more plunged into Berserk. I listen to videogame music for this mood setting, as I find many of the composers to be extremely talented. So I compiled my own list that contains music from:

Chrono Cross OST
Berserk OST
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion OST
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children OST

and other various Final Fantasy songs

System of a Down - Deer Dance
Susperia - Situation Awareness
System of a Down - Toxicity
Iced Earth - My Own Savior

Reading berserk without a good music just makes it less enjoyable than it could be.
Life is what you make it, why tourture yourself? ;]

There are certain songs I can't even hear without thinking of Berserk. Mostly Metallica, especially Fade to Black and To Live is to Die.
And, for no reason at all, Tool's Sweat off Opiate. I tend to listen to Metallica or Tool with Berserk, and those ones seemed to go best.
Metallica is good for the action scenes, Tool for the drama.

Like many, I don't like to be distracted from what's going on, so I opt for something that simply enhances the atmosphere itself. Usually it's "Murder", but the Berserk OST itself as a whole is the norm.

Otherwise its "Dusky Battlefield","Sigh" or "Sigh 2" (or "Sign", since it seems there's still a debate over which exactly it is lol) from "Chapter of the Millenium Falcon~Record of the Holy War" (Game OST)

I'd have to also say... The Boondock Saints soundtrack goes very very well with reading the manga... in my meager opinion

Liquid Mushroom or other Goa trance that doesn't get too repetitive.

Yes, because repetitive is the devil.

Hollow by Submersed was on repeat for 3 days straight when I read through the whole manga back in -06. I fits perfectly into my view of Guts, the emptyness he feels after the loss of his comrades and the rage after the betrayal from Griffith, the harm his love has come to, the loss of the Caskas he knew. The immense feeling of hopelessness but a rage even greater to make the person who did this too him feel the consequences. The song sends shivers down my spine each damn time I hear it. It IS Berserk in my mind, the love, the hate, the rage, everything.

I used to put a long playlist of misc. tracks from Katatonia albums (from "Tonight's Decision" to "The great cold distance") and Anathema albums (from "The silent enigma" to "a natural disaster").
Shit, "Evidence" is so freakin' good while reading Berserk during the part of Guts traveling alone with caska...

I listen to Hanson exclusively when reading Berserk. I feel it truly brings out the theme, such as, with their epic title mmmbop whilst going through the Great Eclipse is simply tear jerking. Unfortunately for Hanson, material doesn't continuously flow out, or even stagger at a slow and mind numbing pace as it would Berserk. So my play list is fairly well used, and has been lacking material for some ages.

Everything from Berserk OST except for the song "Ball".

Lots of Susumu Hirasawa, too many to list, but in particular there are 2 songs that are from some other anime he did the music to that fit perfectly with Berserk.
They are "Gaasamu no Tatakai" and "Gaasamu no Kikan". Mainly it's his newer songs that I listen too, not many of his older one would fit in well.

Anyway , I think songs with lyrics tend to distract you when you read a book or a manga. I prefer instrumental songs and mostly movie and game soundtracks.

My favorites are:
Epic: Basil Polendouris - Conan The Barbarian OST
Sci-fi: Vangelis - Blade runner OST , Alexander Brandon - Deus Ex OST
Horror: Akira Yamaoka - Silent Hill OST

Up to this moment I had always listened to "Sigfried Death and Funeral March" (Wagner), "Moonlight Sonata" (Beethoven), "The call of Ktulu" (Metallica) or "Beneath the Mire" (Opeth) while reading Berserk, changing the song according to the mood of the chapter, but that's over.

The Court of the Crimson King has it all.

I like how you have a bunch of classical composers and then Metallica.

Well, there is music for everything, and some genres mix better with certain situations. For example, progressive rock is good for work or getting high (I'm assuming the later is true, I have yet to enjoy the experience), classic music is good for melancholic moments or that "Wow" feeling you get when you see something overwhelmingly awesome (trepidation?), metal is usually the best partner for good ol' ultra-violence, the Triumvirate (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabath and Deep Purple) is the best music to listen while driving, etc...
In regards to classical music, I have to admit I know very little about it, since I only recently started actively downloading it.

PS: I'm probably just hallucinating again....but doesn't everything look smaller?
PS2: BTW Herald, what happened to your avatar?
