Since the white hawk apperead in people's dreams it wouldn't be suprising if he affected them to have the vatican symbol looking like the brand.

When I checked the two symbols (vatican and brand) I could see some similarities, but for some it might be a stretch. The key thing they have in common is the vertical axis in the middle and that they both have things swirling about them. There is also the tip of the axis, which in the brand is just a small three-pronged thing, whereas the vatican symbol is more expansive and looks like some bird (but interestingly still has three "points": the wingtips and the head)

I wouldn't be surprised if the symbol purposefully borrows from the caduceus symbol (that's the symbol you see nowadays in some medically-related circles, with the two serpents twisting around a pole with wings spreading from the top). It at least is pretty apparent that the vatican symbol resembles it greatly, I think. Actually the caduceus symbol itself is an old alchemical symbol (and a very important one at that) representing, among other things, transformation and enlightenment.

Also, for those that still are not digging the magical turn that Berserk has taken recently, consider that as far as I can tell, Miura has been basing all the prinicples on actual mystical/alchemical concepts, and I think he is using many symbols very carefully. The term "Od" that the witches use is not a name pulled out of thin air, for example. To learn a bit more, just search wikipedia for "Odic force"

Probably did that on purpose, there are a ton of things like that. Also, think about it this way: The author lives in Asia (of course) but based this whole series on a fairytale- European setting. So pretty much, a lot of his ideas were derived from history books and research I think. Probably thought the Catholic Church would be fun to pick on...

I once saw a picture of a guy dressed up like Gatts ..... and I now understand why he had that damned eye patch on.

I see that the prototype has VERY strong influence of Konan the Barbarian, where as the present Berserk is much more original. I guess Miura though it through very well.

I think its more like he started with the idea of a Konan the Barbarian character and it evoleved making it more original. But honestly I've never seen any Konan movies or anything. Are they any good?

Now when you say it, he mightve stolen a thing or two from Conan yes.
Havent seen the Conan movies in ages though, so cant say if they are good or bad.

Glad someone took the time to translate this and it was also nice to see Miura improved on the story because it seemed kind of lame. "Garrrr I'm pirate prototype Gattsl"

Wasn't Berserk Vol. 1 originally released in 1989? He improved ENORMOUSLY. The ART is like a completely different style, guts makes more stereotypical anime faces and his fake arm seems to be able to move like a real hand, the stories alot different too. It just seems like he came a very long way in just a year.

QC is a blessing, at least from my perspective as a translator. I for one am greatly appreciative for your help

QC is actually a very uncommon term for the job. In the corporate world, we call this Quality Assurance or QA for short. Never have I heard the term QC till I came into the 'scene'. There are many types of QA, however I feel that Starnum is the QA of not only spelling, but grammar, and sometimes editing... noticing untranslated parts. This is a very important process IMHO.

Not to lick boots, but your QC is one of the most important differences between EG and others releases. Here everything is as well written and done as (probably) as Miura's own

Man, I have most Hawks releases in my computer (since EG just started recently). If wasn't for them, I wouldn't have many Berserk volumes, but ... oh, sometimes it just pisses me off such grammar errors, and sometimes even spelling errors...if I can see it (I'm brazillian), I can imagine what you guys feel...
