demons call themselves angels because they can fool the feable minded that way by tricking people into thinking they're a force for good
I know that, I just meant, that Miura calls them like this is a funny and good thing.
And after all everything that happens could be fate. You'll never know either it was destined or not.
Maybe all that aren't bound to fate are also only used and maybe everything happens randomly, maybe even Idea has no control and he has just luck with the things he says would happen.
I agree with newbified that it is difficult or not even possible to discuss such a topic.
Nice post I have to say many things I can agree with.

Yes, the fate/destiny argument certainly can always call the cheap but valid point that everything was already pre-ordained beforehand, but there is a problem with that as well, at least in this context. Fate was directly tied to the manipulations of the Idea in the lost chapter, meaning that the Idea was manipulating the threads of fate in order to suit the humans innermost desires. It showed Griffith the extent of its manipulations in order to not just let Griffith get where he was, but also to want to get where he was. So somehow, the Idea is connected to the forces of fate, or otherwise is undermining them (or maybe even vice-versa!). There is little to no mention yet of any involvement in Guts supposed "fate", other than the predictions of Zodd that all those surrounding Griffith would die when his ambitions are crushed. But there are major differences in the coincidences that surround Griffith's survival and upbringing and Guts'. If you look back, Griffith's survival at every point where we see him about to die was protected mysteriously by the behelits presence, the behelit that ultimately brought him to meet the Idea. Guts' protection came almost exclusively from an equally mysterious drive to live, which flows within him even when he has experienced great trauma and others would have preferred to simply die. Even his rescue by SK can possibly be attributed to SKs acknowledgment of his abnormally strong will to "struggle". So far, we have been seeing more oppositions than alignments between things connected to the Idea and Guts. Of course, there could always come some major plot twist that turns all these scattered impressions on their head, but it is hard for me to imagine how Miura could pull that off without making the transition too disjointed. But hell, I trust him, so either way I'll still be blown away by the story I think.
As for the concept of the fates, it is an ancient idea as most people can imagine, but probably contrary to most people's understanding of fate and destiny, these things actually can imply a choice as well. The choice of free will. If one is fated in a static way, then no matter what that person does or chooses to do, the outcome will be statically the same. But with a more dynamic understanding, one can forge an entirely other destiny or path through the myriad choices, small and large, that one makes in life. In essence, if you struggle against your fate at every turn, and in the end over come it, then what else can it be but an escape, or a takeover, of one's own fate? Many might point out that perhaps that person was destined to struggle, but if you think about it, it doesn't make sense. If they were destined to merely struggle, then they weren't really struggling against their fate at all, but rather going with it. (With such a destiny, the choice of free will lies in relinquishing all struggle and transcending these binds) Besides, how can one be destined to struggle against destiny (and win on top of everything)? It sounds like a contradiction to me. Does this make sense?

MrFelony wrote:hehe i think part of the reason why i follow the "guts is bound by fate" idea is that I think it fits the tragic nature of the story. No matter what guts does, he is following this path that will lead him down to the tragic ending i think Berserk will have...
and to clarify about why i believe guts was fated to escape. I dont think Idea gives 2 shits for the Godhand...what his job is to do is weave along events and what not according to the desires of the people (in my minds eye). To help support the greed and evils found in humans he has created the Godhand, Guts was created to oppose them. Idea has to have this "hero" in the situation because i think its a strong part of the human desire is to have a hero but also an enemy. at the moment guts plays the role of the enemy and griffith the hero (b/c both are confused for being different hawks). so I believe that guts was destined to be the opposition to the godhand...hence why he manages to survive all these amazing scenarios
I agree fully on this. I have thought like this many times.

In RL (:kekeke:), I actually believe that there is a mix of free will and divine intervention. sort of like there is a protection from us heading towards the worst possible direction, but its our responsibility to make it the best. but in this case, I see the story as being a tragedy and that Guts' end will be much like Griffiths and the Slug apostle guy. I think he is going to make the choice between casca and killing griffith, and if he follows his destined path, he will choose to kill griffith and in turn possibly kill casca to help fuel his rage (much like his inner demon suggested), but if he doesnt follow his chosen path, then he will be successful in starting a life with casca aside from Griffith. though I HIGHLY doubt that that is going to happen. (already debated but hey why not bring it up again

).
I know I didnt expressly say it, but I didnt mean to say that there is no choice or free will, just that people choose to follow their destined path...most of the time. you can never be certain whether it was "fate" or free will that made the slug apostle guy choose to die instead of sacrificing his daughter, but thats the kind of choice i see Guts having to make in the upcoming volumes. To me it just seems so obvious that Guts is heading down the same path as Griffith. I don't completely retract my old belief that he may end up using the behilit in some way, but I think he may end up embracing his inner demon to achieve his dream/goal/destiny to kill griffith.
and if i had the money I would personally pay muira a couple of mil just to finish this god damn thing up cause the suspense is fuckin killin me

It sure as hell gets some people motivated though. But I'm sure Miura already has all the cash he wants. He probably doesn't even care about money really.

guts and roderick should fight and then vandimeon sees guts is a badass, give him a ship, and off they go

they already know he is a bad ass, but Rod still might fight him to keep Farnese. But Guts would probably be like "... I didnt tell her to join me she did it of her own free will..." then Rod will cry.
