Evil_Genius' Berserk community, Kentaro Miura's epic masterpiece, still active and translated. (Please don't ask about older Volumes. Buy from DarkHorse and support Miura.)
The prototype is Miura's first attempt to bring his idea of Berserk into fruition. There's more info elsewhere on this forum I think, in another thread. Forget which one atm, but a search should answer all your questions, whether it be a forum search or a google one.
Regarding the matter of the missing chapter, the FAQ addresses that question quite clearly. The prototype is exactly as Wandering_Mystic stated, and also someone mentioned Berserk was originally intended to be a shonen.

There's no problem, to be honest, of the three different raws I have, I like yours the best. It's just the folds that bugs me but otherwise it's fine. As always, any help is appreciated and your contribution is definitely important.

Just wanted to give you some sort of indication about the prototype's release, I have the translation completed by Wandering_Mystic a couple of days ago, and I've gotten Femto to edit it. I had plan to release it to coincide the Berserk and Zetman chapters, but I told Femto to take it at his own pace as not to conflict with his real life schedule, so it might be released after the planned time, but no matter. So fear not, the prototype is indeed in production and should be near and ready for release by this weekend. If Femto suddenly gets too busy, I'll transfer the remaining pages to Laik or I'll work on them myself.

Yeah I can see the German translation :
"Was machen sie meine junge" "Nein, that kanst du da gar nicht"
(Ill reserve myself for one or two misspellings there)
