IMHO the most terrific thing is to make a shocking scene without all that "disturbing" stuff, which can only make someone throw up rather than make some good emotional effect. For example the last scene in "Mad Max" is just... (if you saw it you know what I'm talking about )

I liked that image in volume 1 where Gutts shows up from under the corpses (with the one hanging around his Dragon Slayer )

..........!!

I loved Mad Max, and also the Roadwarrior. Man I miss the good old Mel Gibson.

The difference between the characters in a manga/comic book and the characters in a movie, is that the characters in a movie are really just actors and it's hard to really get into it when you know it's just somebody playing a role. Manga/comic book characters are not real, but they are authentic, they aren't playing a role, they ARE these characters as far as the reader is concerned. Animated violence gets me more for this reason.

Personally I usually find gory scenes excessive, just too much for what the author/player is trying to express. Most times my thoughts are like "well that was not really needed". But for Berserk, I find that the extreme detail of those "gory" scenes (not in particular, since the whole drawing art of Miura is über) to be somehow necessary. By drawing in such detail, i think Miura allows the reader to submerge in the very "intestines" of what is going on, the eccentricity of the detail allows Miura to "touch" the brains of the readers, allowing us to enjoy Berserk juice to the very last drop of blood.

To me it really depends on how its executed. Sometimes real violence looks just way to fake, but the most disturbing scene in anything is the scene from American History X, it makes me cringe every time I see it. Normally though animated seems more real to me though. Either way unless its really harsh I am normally unphased.

The most disturbing image I've found It's not the "bite the curb" scene from American History X nor the famous "Adult Attack, Adult Attack!" in Berserk.

For me, the most disturbing image it's from...

Image

Chrono Trigger !!!

I really was shocked the first time I ended the game and it came up with that.

Nah. Read some of Uziga's stuff and Berserk seems tame. Ichi the Killer, too, probably.

Here, have a look:

It always depends on the softening or deadening of people.
All this gory stuff does nothing to me.

I find the space followed by the triple exclamation marks to be very disturbing indeed.

For me, Berserk's greatness doesn't come from the gore or violence, or even just the story. Rather it is how significant and inter-related all those things are to each other, and how in turn they are connected to other deep and significant themes.

When I see the torture by demons, I see stark detachment of humanity from things that were once human. When looking at the tortures brought upon by Mozgus and the church, I see a mirror of hypocrisies and lunacy within our own societies. The orgy scenes echo a perversion of ancient pagan rites, in other words, a languishing plea from people who have long ago lost touch with a healthy way of life and who yearn unknowingly for a return to those times, to ease the suffering of their own souls.

The pain and suffering in berserk is very stark and really scrutinizes the way different people deal with their own emotional and spiritual wounds, and in some cases how these scars on humans, collectively as well as individually, were formed in the first place. In this way, all violence and gore and other disturbing imagery is not only acceptable, but really very necessary to the message of the story as I see it. When I see something disgusting, I can't help but feel even more drawn in to the story for precisely the reasons I stated above. By the same token, when I see Gatts shred and annihilate his enemies, it is not the messiness and violence that excites me, but rather his incredible will to push through and overcome his life's trials his own way. Violence for the sake of violence is stupid and juvenile. But violence as a metaphor for life is a powerful symbol, especially when shaped by a master such as Miura.

Well, after checking out a few of those uziga.sakura.ne.jp pictures, I'm awfully glad Berserk isn't in color.

Man, I've seen photos of real traumas and been around a couple of traumas and fatalities, but that site really brought cannibalistic fetishism to life.

I'm too lazy to read all the posts here, but I think most of the disgusting images from Berserk can be summed up from the second half of my Wenches Gone Wild Omake:

No, she does. Right after he sticks his sword through her belly.
