it was made by Go Nagai, creator for stuff like Getter Robo and Cutey Honey
its about a quiet and timid boy named Akira Fudo whose parents were killed in the Himalayans (sp) after a freak accident. after that tragic event he was adopted by the Nakamura family and befriends their daughter Miki, with whom he develops a crush. everything seems normal until his best friend, Ryo Asuka from long ago suddenly appears and demands that Akira comes with him, all lthe while brandishing a sawed off shotgun and a large knife... "its for protection," he says
this is where the story takes off because Ryo explains that apparently demons once ruled the earth but after the last Ice Age they were trapped in ice and now, due to Global warming they are thawing out, resulting in their return. The only way to kill a demon is to meld with one but it also requires a pure soul to maintain control of it. Ryo takes Akira to a Santanic night club where he begins to attack the patrons in order attract demons with their blood; a Black Sabath if thou wilst. Not long after, everyone begins to transform into demons and Akira is possessed by Amon, the God of War. But, due to Akira's pure soul he is able to control Amon and the two become Devilman. Thus, begins the saga.
this manga was later made into a tv series, a 2-part OVA that was done by Manga Entertainment, a live-action movie that just came out recently (apparently it sucks; Bob Sapp is in it too... the football player), another OVA which depicts the events that occur just before the final battle (its also ultra gory), and a few spin off manga series which i havent had the chance to read. Also, there was a series called Devilman Lady which you might have heard of. its an alternate storyline of the Devilman saga.
id say the best part of this manga is the "Ultra-Violence" involved... everyone dies, and that includes women and children... also the overall atmosphere of the story really creeped me out
if you wanna get into id suggest hopping onto DC++ and d/l the 2 part OVA which sums up the birth of Devilman and his fight with Sirene, one of the epic battles of the manga (though not so epic since its only 45 mins long) the first scene in the OVA has to be the most disturbing scene ive ever seen (rhymes
) because it shows angel getting eaten by the demons
if it doesnt sound interesting then blame me for that... im terrible at explanations... but at least watch the first episode of the OVA or youll seriously be missing out
