Re: Superhero comics and other comics.
I meant the quality of Year one and co not the type of story.
For example Knightfall saga and its stories was very long. Quality wise i rate it very highly. Dixon,O'Niell knew how to write really interesting Batman stories.
GM has done similar stuff just not as good. Ra's crossover for example.
For me it doesnt matter if its crossover, mini or regular arc in ongoing. Just give me a good story.
Batman RIP i dont even like the sound of. It sounds like a gimmick.
IMO when GM overly important stuff is gone i want Paul Dini. He knows how to write Batman stories short, episodic or not. With a big arc i will bet he understands Batman better than GM. Which is why i have never thought of dumping Tec.
I just hope his run is over soon no matter the quality of the stories he hasnt written yet. I want a Batman i know again.

Re: Superhero comics and other comics.
The thing with Morrison is that he usually comes to established books that have a lot of history and just does whatever the fuck he wants with the characters.Eldo wrote:To some extent, I agree with you. But his early JLA would prove otherwise. I think it's because Morrison is so wild that he wants to tamper with the characters, but DC has him on a leash and says, 'bad dog' to some of his ideas. And he has to play it safe as well, so he could only rehash old ideas and breathe new life into them. I haven't read All-Star at all, so I can't really comment on that.
A lot of people rave about his X-Men run but I remember feeling such a disconnect with the book because it didn't read like the X-Men at all, it just read like Morrison writing his usual crazy shit using X-Men characters.
Compare that to Geoff Johns who really uses continuity as he moves his stories forward. I mean, how easy would it have been to say "oh, Hal Jordan was really in a cocoon, he wasn't really Parallax," but Johns thought it out and said "yes, Hal Jordan was Parallax but this is what Parallax really is" which lead to the Sinestro Corps War, the color spectrum of emotions and then Blackest Night.
All-Star Superman is basically Superman in Grant Morrison's world and that's why it works better than, say, his Batman run.
Re: Superhero comics and other comics.
And I have to say, a breath of fresh air is what it is needed. What was the last decent X-Men arc before Morrison's? The last I read was Wolverine being a skrull, where the real Wolverine was actually Death for Apocalypse. And before that, Onslaught, Zero Tolerance, the Magneto clone, which weren't all that well written.Femto wrote:A lot of people rave about his X-Men run but I remember feeling such a disconnect with the book because it didn't read like the X-Men at all, it just read like Morrison writing his usual crazy shit using X-Men characters.
Morrison's ideas in X-Men build the framework of what X-Men is today, with Mutant Town, the X-Teams being public, etc. Although this was screwed up to some extent with House of M, the groundwork that Morrison build is still there. There is hardly a trace of the 90's story line that is there.
The Jordan fans must have been so damned happy that he wasn't responsible for his actions (wiping out the entire corps) because he was possessed. That absolved him of all his crimes committed as Parallax. I have to say, I didn't like Rebirth that much, but I do like what Geoff Johns is doing to the Green Lantern book. Now, if only he could stop expanding the roster in JSA, because the number of members are starting to take a toil in the book, I reckon. It's big enough to have 3 teams in it. But hey, it's still a good book, but I'm just not caring for some of the characters right now.Femto wrote:Compare that to Geoff Johns who really uses continuity as he moves his stories forward. Re: Superhero comics and other comics.
I didn't really care for Hal Jordan before Rebirth.
I find that allowing himself to be possessed by fear and unleashing Parallax is a big crime in and of itself and that's something he'll have to deal with for the rest of his life.
So again, it's not like Johns is saying it never happened, it did and Jordan dealing with the consequences of being Parallax is something fairly big in the Green Lantern books right now.
And I'm sorry, I just didn't like Morrison's X-Men run.
Xavier fighting Cassandra Nova in the womb?
That's funny in Venture Bros., for an X-Men book it's kinda silly.
I think his only claim to fame in that book is bringing Emma Frost into the spotlight.
Then again, I don't really care about her either way.

Re: Superhero comics and other comics.
What Morrison did to the X-Men is added some Vertigo elements into X-Men. The twins fighting in the womb were seen in Constantine. Come on, I don't think that's much more ridiculous than Onslaught being a product of Magneto's corruption onto Xavier when they exchanged a battle of the minds (Onslaught, in a way, is like Xavier and Magneto's love baby). I also loved the idea of introducing mutant culture into the X-books, which is really because of Morrison's. Furthermore, the whole idea of the weapon series, with Wolverine being number 10, and all based off from Steve Rogers super soldier serum. I don't care for Emma Frost either, but hey, she was well written in the book. And Xorn, before it was revealed he was Magneto, was a really cool character.

Re: Superhero comics and other comics.
Well, you're using a horrible 90's crossover as a gauge here so yeah, Morrison's stuff will most likely seem better than Onslaught.
Fact of the matter is, I don't think there is a lot of memorable stuff about Morrison's run.
I have all the single issues of it right next to me from when I bought them back in the day and I don't even remember half of the stuff that happened in them.
I vaguely remember the Xorn character but I have no idea what his story is.
Sentinels killed Magneto, Cyclops had a psychic affair and the team fought Cassandra Nova.
That's all I remember about the book.
And a green gelatinous dude.
It's like he doesn't really write superheroes, he writes Morrison stuff with superheroes in it.
Even in 52 you could pretty much tell what was Morrison's stuff, moreso than with any of the other writers, because it was just his usual crazy shit with established characters.
It could just be that the superhero genre is not the most suited for Morrison's crazy writing.
That's why I'm looking forward to reading the Invisibles because I'm expecting Morrison through and through.

Well, I just really picked any typical 90's batshit crazy storyline that I could remember.Femto wrote:Well, you're using a horrible 90's crossover as a gauge here so yeah, Morrison's stuff will most likely seem better than Onslaught.
I just recently read his X-Men arc, so they're definitely quite memorable in my mind. Sorry that you don't agree, but I loved how his ideas exploded off the page. I haven't read much of Joe Kelly's work outside of JLA and Deadpool (which was absolutely fantastic, but his JLA work was not up to standard with Morrison), so I can't really comment on that. It was probably the late Tom Harris days where he would basically write everything himself and constantly butt in on the writers.
As for 52, yes, I do agree you could spot Morrison's stuff, because it's just so crazy and much like him without taking his medication. He wrote the Oolong Island scientists and Will Magus, which I had to say was brilliant work. You could usually spot it by some quotation marks at the end of sentences. The only person that I couldn't spot was Geoff Johns' writing in 52.

I added that before you replied and I think it's a fairly accurate statement. It could just be that the superhero genre is not the most suited for Morrison's crazy writing.
Morrison's Batman is the most tame of his superhero work that I've read so far but I only read the first 3 issues or so before I lost interest.
I think Johns wrote the Black Adam stuff and it makes sense because that part is very character driven which I'd say is one of Johns' strong points (Black Adam is an asshole, meets Isis, becomes less of an asshole, loses Isis, becomes super asshole).

if you get chance, get Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. I got the new anniversity edition that had his orignal script that he wrote on his type writer, misspellings galore!
but it isn't the most tradition Batman, but a seriously dark story of Arkham Asylum.

I completely forgot it was Morrison though.
I didn't really enjoy it that much, Dave McKean's crazy artwork pulled me out of the story a bit.
Re: Superhero comics and other comics.
oh then nevermind.
may not be a superhero, but i did just finish Y The Last Man. I wish they gave us a bit more, but the way they did the ending was very well done. Of course there are bit where it was just outragous, but i enjoyed it.
Now seriously, if this was made into a movie, i would see it in a heart beat. why? because of the many female sex scenes that they will have, that they better have.

It is being made into a movie and they're hinting that Shia Lebouff will be Yorick.

one liners, cant hold his own as a man, and chicks flock to him, yeah Shia Lebouff is Yorick.

Re: Superhero comics and other comics.
I just want to say that Peter Tomasi is shaping up to be the next best writer of Superhero comics. If you've read his Black Adam series, you'll understand. And the couple of GLC issues he wrote with Mongul. Damn.

Yes, yes, yes. I like the notes and stuff at the bottom of the script. He gives new ideas and backgrounds for several of the Rogue's Gallery. Clayface is basically walking cancer, Mad Hatter has a real pedophile vibe going on, and so on.halfnhalf wrote:if you get chance, get Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth. I just recently read the last issue drom Y The Last Man and as usual with post apocalyptic tales, I ended up feeling empty after the last words were read. That's the way it should be. In any case, It's really a good story and I hope this goes out as a hardcover book. maybe 3 20 issues books.I would definately buy it.

I've decided to make an exception to my "will not buy single issues again" stance.
I'll be going to my comic book store once a month to get a copy of Green Lantern and only Green Lantern.
Blackest Night and everything that'll lead up to it is simply something that I cannot miss.
Damn you, Geoff Johns.

Does this have anything to do with that catch phrase having to do with "Whether during the light of day or darkest night.....ergh.....something....something...."evil".....yaddah.....yaddah......ending with some word the rhymes with "night"?Femto wrote:I've decided to make an exception to my "will not buy single issues again" stance.

I have been enjoying Daredevil 97-101 and specially the storyline Without Fear. I liked alot how Mister Fear played DD. I got alittle Deja Vu from Born Again. Bru's first real DD storyline is great so far.
