Harddrive crash

FUUUUUUCK.

One of the worst feelings ever. Recovery would be too expensive. Lost a few screenplays. Countless lyrics. Thousands of song and comics. And tons of very expensive-illegally downloaded-software.

Plus a lot of porn.

Why?

wait they wont let you keep your old one? if you are buying a new one not getting a new one for free, isn't that sort of like stealing?

Data is only really lost if the physical space where it is stored is damaged. Did your harddrive went up in flames, or was it just a plain old regular crash, so it won't be recognized by OS's anymore? If so -

GetDataBack: http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm

Recovered 99% of the files of my harddrive when it crashed. Pretty much everthing was working but 1 or 2 avi files out of 400 gigs of data that was saved.

There's a "free" version of the program "available" on the net too 8)

Thing is. I ran a diagnostic. As did the apple store, and in both cases. The computer couldnt even read that there was a harddrive at all. And when the computer is turned on it made a clicking sound.

Still I wish I knew bout that before i turned the computer in. The 79 bucks would have been worth a try at least.

so we have confirmation that macs are not indestructible ...

seriously though, i feel so bad about that, not really for the loss of things like movies and comics, but for the stuff you've made. happened to me too, 300 hundered pages of a novel that never got printed off got lost due to my CPU, which was on the floor, got hit bad by water when the boiler burst in the room next to mine. it caused the whole tower to short circuit. smoke was coming out of it.

i was so pissed that i drop kicked the tower into the dumpster.

though, luckily, it gave me the initiative to change the story around and now it's not as stupid :)

Apple uses the same hard drives as everyone else, they're not special in any way. People should really back up their stuff regularly regardless of what kind of computer they got.

Wait a minute, why didn't you retrieve the hard drive? The data should've still been in there.

cuz the actual physical thing was fried, total toast, it was black and very smelly. no retrieval after that.

No cheap retrieval after that actually. For some amounts of money, you CAN retrieve stuff from burnt or otherwise totally crashed harddrives still. Of course that depends on if the data is worth the money.

That's why it wasn't worth a lot of money.

Nice, that means you can upgrade to Snow Leopard for just $29 bucks.

I seem to recall this happening to you once before as well, right? Man, bad luck. That sucks. I hope your next HDD holds up better than its predecessors. ;)

Yea man. That was on my old dell. It used to crash every year or so. Dark dark days for me.

But back then I had nothing on my harddrive that was worth fretting about. Sadly i lost alot of things important to me this last time.

I'm currently shoppin around for a cheap external harddrive. 500gb or maybe a terabyte.

A terabyte is completely unnecessary.

I mean, Christ, what the fuck can you fill a Terabyte with?

HOW MUCH PORN CAN YOU HAVE?!

hehe its nice haveing a terabyte internal (or putting it in an external enclosure) when you consider it is only like 20-30 dollars more then a 500g harddrive (last i checked which was a while back)
holy crap 1.5T harddrives are cheap compared to before. 120 for this one

A terabyte isn't that much anymore these days, with HD series going through torrents, and no single game installing under 10 gigs anymore. My (since about half a year unused) WoW folder alone is 19 gigs.

400 gigs Anime and Non-anime series and movies (not porn)
300 gigs games
100 gigs programs
only ~130 gigs left

Let me help you with your last statement, Aetherfukz.

I agree though, considering how small the difference in price is between sizes, you might as well get a big drive. That way you don't ever have to worry about space... for your porn.
