Where did Berserk hook you?

Post by The Herald »

The point in the Berserk story that hooked me, other than the Great Eclipse of course, was when Casca was lying naked with Guts.

Berserk hooked me right in the balls, man... and it hasn't let go since. I can't imagine what it'll feel like when the day comes that Berserk ends. Probably really cathartic, and relieving, because my balls are getting really sore from all the waiting.

Nah, but in all seriousness, I think Berserk hooked me with the very first episode. When I fist saw the Dragon Slayer I about creamed my pants, heh. Gatts as The Black Swordsman is just awesome, but I didn't watch the episodes back to back, because I remember renting them on DVD from Block Buster when they first came out. So by the time I saw the Zodd episode, I had forgotten about Gatts as the Black Swordsman, but I was hooked all over again when Zodd showed up. ;)

I was getting into the series when Griffith's dramatic rise to power was getting to its peak, but I was hooked when Guts and Caska hooked up.

I'll never forget the first time I read Berserk. It all started like this: *flashback effect, with the screen fading and that weird long-drawn sound I've never been able to identify...I think its a citara*

-Jolly good! Full metal alchemist was very entertaining! This japanese cartoon-thingy is surprisingly good, and not as ridiculously childish as I expected. Who would have thought I was ever going to watch cartoons again? Of course, this was a one-time thing only, only losers watch oriental animation.
-Fullmetal Panic? Mmmm......it sounds similar.....may be I should give it a try. Just to check if there's any relation.
*48 hours and 1 series(actually 3, counting the sequel and the spin-off) later*
-Wow. That was unhealthy................I-...I dont think I can stand up. Well, thats it, I'm done. It was fun. *casually scrolls down the website (page?) from which he just downloaded FMP (http://www.elrincondelmanga.com/foro/sh ... hp?t=75282)*
-BerserK? Hehehe....as in crazy-viking? Thats hilarious....what does the japanese know about vikings? Lesseee.....Guts? Giant Sword? Black Swordman? Hahahahahaha! This is the most retarded review I've ever read!
I am going to download the first episode anyway, just to see if it's as bad as I think. (besides Berserk is a cool name for a series).
-Mmm.....the atmosphere is unexpectedly gritty. Ooooh, ominous lightining.
-Heehehe.....talk about obviously evil.
-Did he just turn into a snake? Don't do it man, that never helps!
-What I just watched was as awesome as it was unoriginal. Racconto? Woods? I feel like I am watching "The forbidden age"
-He was born from a corpse? Has been killing (or assisting in the process) people ever since he was 5? Hahahaa...talk about having a shitty life. Its hilarious because he's not me.
-Ha! He got his ass kicked by a strategist. A white haired one. Who's also.....pretty. and charismatic. And just told Guts he wants him. Mmmmm.....curious.
-Why does he keep philosophizing about the meaning of his life? He's just a socially accepted mass murderer. He should just go with it.
-Mmmmm.....Thats true. Given that we are not given a purpose, we must look for one on our own. Yours Guts, is one hell of a convoluted way to reach the same conlussion I arrived at.
-Griffith is right. What have I done for the sake of my dreams?
*fast forward in memory (no animus involved)*
-Holy shit! He took down 100 men by himself. You are da man Guts!
-Thats right! True friendship entails equality. You know how's that called Griffith? The name's defeat. Drink it in.
-Sniff......so true......we only realize what we had once its lost. So true....
-GRIFFITH! YOU FUCKING BASTARD! FUCKING KILL HIM!
-Is he....is he raping her? Gutts, I command you to fucking rape HIM. With your sword, if possible.
-wait.its over? How can it be over? No fucking way!

-Manga? Thats like a comic right? Isnt that, you know, for superman-loving retards?
Mmmm.....mmmm.........mmmmmng! God dammit, ok, I'm downloading the damn thing.
Heh, who would have thought I was going to end up reading comics.

*One best-thing-I-have-ever-read-later*

-.............."Tunk" (falls asleep from exhaustion).

Is that your way of telling them to shut up? Just say it or you might confuse and encourage them into an orgy of rambling.

Berserk hooked me the first episode, when he stood over Phil the Immortal, and slowly shot crossbow bolts into his head. Gutz goes "We are mortal and fragile, but even if we are tortured or wounded, we will fight to survive. You should feel the pain we feel, and understand. I am the messenger that will deliver you to that pain and understanding."
then Phil goes, "No... please... don't kill me."
Then Gutz replies, "And what is it you said when those people begged you for mercy ?"

That had me hooked.

Dude, it's called subtlety. Instead of saying "STFU n00b!", which normally elicits long, boring insult-exchanging, you just throw in some undeserved praise, which will let the long-ass post writer wondering "Whats so funny about it? Even as I wrote it I thought: "Man, this is the most boring piece of shit you have ever written...stop! Just stop! You already pressed the post button? Ah, fuck it, no one cares".

Its ridiculously effective, you should try it. Just keep in mind that it wont work against people who just like to talk or write for the sake of it. They are too full of themselves to even question the possibility that something they write or say can be boring.

I am an exception though, everything I do is fun, interesting, and full of ponies.

Some moron at the local anime club showed the last episode during a meeting last October. No explanation, no backstory, no setup, nada - just *click* ZOMG PEOPLE GETTING EATEN BY MONSTERS. The club president turned it off right when it started (threatening) to become a tentacle porn, and everybody said "well, that was utterly retarded" and went on to something else. I already knew the series by reputation, plus I was a lot more jaded towards the whole violence-and-tentacles thing than most of the club members, so I was still curious about what was going on. So I picked up Volume 1 of the manga, and that was that.

Of course, now whenever I tell other club members "Berserk's actually a really good series, you should check it out," they roll their eyes at me and say "oh, so you're into that stuff, are you?" remembering only the one episode they've seen. Makes me want to punch that idiot in the face for letting HURR I'M GONNA SHOCK PEOPLE be the entire motivation behind bringing the series to club.

Wow, that is ghey. I'd be mad at that guy, and also the others for not trusting you when you say Berserk is actually really good. Hell, I think it's amazing. I just don't like it when people judge something based on something they saw or heard that was out of context. Actually check it out for yourself first and see if it's good, that's what I say, especially if a friend recommends it. Unless you don't trust your "friends" advice, heh.

For the most part, it seems like you're right. This is one of those groups that likes to complain "don't call them cartoons, they're mature works for adults!" - and then sit around and giggle like a pack of middle-schoolers whenever they see boobs.

Where did Berserk hook me?

About 1 minute into the Anime, when Guts draws the Dragonslayer, cuts a guy in half, and shatters the stone floor with it. At that moment I instantly knew that show (and subsequently the manga) was beyond awesome.

Honestly, at first, I was like, "Ohh great... another anime where the main character uses a freakin' giant sword. *yawn*"
Another thing that kept me watching, was it was clear in the 1st episode that he had a fake arm and he was missing an eye. When it went into Flashback mode, I really wanted to find out how he lost them. The first time I watched it, the scene in the forrest put a hook in too. I thought it was some kind of flashback or a memory, you know "inner demons", I didn't realize until i read the manga that it was an actual demonic attack, and that it happens almost all the time. My first thoughts were, "He joined some kind of brotherhood or cult, and now he's fighting to be free of it".
All of these little things put hooks in me, but it was the scene at the end(which i described earlier) that set them, and reeled me in like a big fish.

Berserk first hooked me with the anime series first. When the fake hand was revealed to be a cannon, I knew it was awesome. It was a pity that I actually owned the first 10 or so volumes as hand-me-downs from older relatives years before watching the anime, but when I was reading manga back then all I was interested in was Dragon Ball Z and Ranma. Of course, now the Dark Horse volumes replace my worn out ones and sit on my shelves/place somewhere the house (which is quite well translated as well - it's quite westernised and easy to read without completely butchering the Japanese. Although I do know some people who doesn't like Guts speaking 'slang' or casually in the Dark Horse volumes).

But what really hooked me to the manga was wanting to know what happened after the eclipse (ie. the last episode). That's when I had to rummaged the house inside and out for the mangas. I did remember in the back of my head that this anime looked familiar...

I have never seen the anime so i was hooked on the fist chapter i read of the manga. Even before the flashback started. The hard, almost evil look of Guts chasing the demon in the first chapter was pure awesome. Was it the Snake guy ? A few years ago now.

Then you saw how he was born, Guts as a kid and it was a done deal.
