That is a good point. Besides, I will not play the PS3 every day considering I have so many damn consoles that I still play. It is just my room sucks up a lot of power as it is. Hopefully though, Gradius VI comes out for something else and I will not have to get a PS3.

I will buy the ps3 just because MGS4 , FFXIII ,DMC4 and RE5 , also I want the Wii ( just for Zelda ) and the 360 I don't know , only Halo 3 its on my interest list . My first choice this year is the Wii , due the lack of PS3 launch numbers.
BTW that youtube video lawl .

I'm pretty sure most people here have their PC's on for obscene hours a day(mine rarely turns off). This baby adds more to my bill then everything else put together.

I call bull crap on that. Here is why:

HLT command in x86 & AMD64 processors tell the CPU to turn off when not active. While the theoretical use of max power (say 1000 watts for latest and greatest power supplies), you will never peak that for more than a few seconds out of your day. When playing a game, most of the energy goes to your video card which for any given nvidia card is 100 watts constant average) and then 48 watts for an average amd64 processor at full tilt, and another 10 to keep the Harddrive alive for I/O.

PS3 and the Cell processors in particular run at FULL speed with no HLT (short for halt), consoles are not considered 'Computers' in that you do not use it for word processing, it is a dedicated gaming machine. As such, there is no logical reason to implement HLT when the only use is gaming, and when it is turned on, it will go full blast all the time.

Modern day PCs on the other hand run word processors & office type applications and games, when your computer is on doing nothing, it hardly uses any power (10 watts to keep the memory 'RAM' refreshed). When you play a game, it goes full tilt, when you use a MS Word, it uses perhaps 11 watts.

With that much power, I think the PS3 is going to generate a lot of heat. Hope they have enough fans and vents in that thing.

Hopefully they learned from MS's mistake about having the heat sink on the PSU (power supply unit) not well ventilated. Lot of people got angry because it wasn't able to properly dissipate the heat generated by 160watts of power causing the unit to stop functioning.

Just to let you guys know, this isn't a trivial matter. High wattage means more in terms of everything from graphics, to heat, to electric bill.

I'm gonna preorder my Wii console with Woolworths on Friday along with Wii Play (comes free with an additional wireless controller) and Twilight Princess. Since I work there i'm getting some discount and an extra 10% discount this weekend only, so 20% off my goods in total!!!

So how much does it use when I run nothing but Torrents for days? since that is all I use it for, well that and downloading more porn to torrent.

That is the cost of your application you are running (how much CPU it takes), and how much electricity is wasted converting I/O from your internetconnection. Since your video card isn't being touched, and BT software hardly takes up any CPU time (i've tested a few, not eat 100%.. more like 20% when gathering and only 5% when seeding).

Keeping a computer on 24/7 isn't going to earn you the respect of the Green Party, but I'll safely say that your computer idling (seeding no less) uses about as much energy as your Fridge or your TV/DVR on standby.

Now if you did any of that SETI@HOME, Gene folding, or encryption cracking software on your machine, then yeah... you are going to be wasting money on your electric bill because that eats nearly 100% of your CPU time. Now that some of use the GPU (your video card) as well, expect it to be doubly so.

CRTs are the worst offenders btw, leaving those on is the equivalent of leaving your TV on. LCDs have better (lower) energy usage, but in general... if you are not in the room, turn off the monitor/TV.

Glad you asked... :D
The cathode ray tube or CRT, invented by German physicist Karl Ferdinand Braun, is the display device that was long used in most computer displays, video monitors, televisions, radar displays and oscilloscopes. The CRT developed from Philo Farnsworth's work was used in all television sets until the late 20th century and the advent of plasma screens, LCD TVs, DLP, OLED displays, and other technologies. As a result of CRT technology, television continues to be referred to as "the tube" well into the 21st century, even when referring to non-CRT sets.

Wait, what kind of effect will the high wattage have on the graphics?

As for my computer, the only time it's not on is when I'm asleep, or not home. From what I understand that's more rest than most people's computers get, heh. Well, people who actually use their computer that is.

You have it backwards. The power dissipated depends on the capability of the graphics card. Without devolving into a low level discussion of why, can generally think of "faster/better = more power to run". With the PS3 being extremely high end, that means a lot of power.

I leave my computer on too much. No reason to keep the thing on after bed time.

I wonder how much juice my power strips use when on...

That is a good question, look at all your electronic devices you have 'turned off' or on standby that are still plugged into the wall. You will be surprised that some still eat a ton of juice.

There was a report on the local news about just this the other day.

So even when they are standby are still consuming power , hah from now on I have to disconnect everything .

And I read that the ps3 is cooler than the 360 , due his ventilation system ( heh don't know how is called that lmao ) .

So today at Best Buy 5 people showed up and put up a tent outside to camp out for the PS3, they had a car full of food for the week and everything. And Best Buy made them take down their tent and leave. haha Apparently, you cant camp out at Best Buy until 24 hours before the store opens on friday.

Also, they are only getting like 20 60gb PS3s and 6 20gb PS3s. But they will get more than 70 Wiis.

Actually it's quite awesome if you are smart and devious enough to make some bank off of it. A friend of mine got a reserved Premium XBox 360 and sold it for almost 3 times the market price the next day, if I remember correctly. If I had an extra 599 US dollars lying around it's what I would do.

That's a great idea , but for people to buy a ps3 for more than a $1500 at his launch its crazy and stupid too , I mean why just don't wait some months and buy the ps3 with a lot of more games ( well that's for rich people only ) .
