Mozilla Firefox
i recently downloaded and started to use this browser.
WOW its super great!
the user-developed themes and extentions give firefox a definitive edge over microsoft's internet explorer.
i use the minifoxflat theme to maximise browsing space. i can move every toolbar just to a single line like i did in IE previously.
some of the extentions i use:
adblock - everyone must have used this it completely removes all ads and even the google ones.
web search pro - now i can search wiki, anidb, isohunt, etc from my toolbar without going directly to their site and waiting for the page to load.
ymail notifier - another extention that allows me to do stuff without going to the site directly. check for new messages in yahoo mail instantly.
download them all - another staple extention i guess. its a download manager.
=)

There is the reason FF will never hit mainstream. "Hey, if I have IE open my P2P/twenty AIM windows run faster!" I really hope the dev folks that work with FF tame down some of the 'features' that are resource hogs.Femto wrote:Tweak you settings.Eldo wrote:For some reason, Firefox is a huge resource hog.

Right now, it's taking up the most Mem usage, about 42000 k. I'm still using 1.0.2 or something (I think the new version is 1.5) and I'm afraid with each update, the browser will get proceedingly worse. I have found a guide that shows how to tweak the hell out of Firefox, but I really can't be bothered fixing it right now. I'm a bit busy and reading 10 pages of text isn't really comforting for me right now.

1 million downloads doesn't mean mainstream. Assume, if you will, each download was from a unique person. What have you proven? Absolutely nothing. That's a drop in the bucket. I can't tell you how many times I have downloaded some build of FF. Since the last format, I've probably downloaded about 10 different times the installer for it. So spare me the fanboyism.arke wrote:Except it already has.
The suggestion for AdBlock Plus is a good one, however. I would also suggest the Filterset.G Updater. I rarely have to manually block stuff with that list updated.

IE View (full, not lite version). Adds a context menu to open current page in IE as well as settings to open defined sites in IE all the time. It's unfortunately quite useful.
DownThemAll!. Great for leeching pictures and video links from a webpage.
Bookmarks Synchonizer 3. I use a desktop as well as a laptop, and having the bookmarks synced is really nice. Personally, I manually upload and download but it has automatic settings.
Favicon Picker. FF has an annoying bug where some stuff on the Bookmarks Toolbar will aquire the favicon of the button next to it. I have folders and buttons lined up on that bar, and I don't exactly want my ann arbor is overrated link having an ESPN logo. Also handy for changing the favicon of a site you don't really like.
ReloadEvery. This was useful for when I used Firefox to have my Google Calendar open all the time. A bug used to exist where if FF was left open for a while, anything you typed it automatically brought up the Find bar and you couldn't get away from it! Now it's if the program is running, no matter the reloads. Oh well. Should probably uninstall that.

I'd say alot of people know of FF. I mean sure many of them havent dled it, but I think its mostly because they dont wanna change. Iono, when I started seeing my friends who dont even spend that much time on their comps using firefox and saying its much better than IE, I start to think that the words getting around.
this is exactly what i need!Daedelus wrote:IE View (full, not lite version). Adds a context menu to open current page in IE as well as settings to open defined sites in IE all the time. It's unfortunately quite useful.
there are certain pages that i come across that will not work in firefox... MS related sites that simply demand you use IE. or some java pages like the one from my singapore brokerage site that shows live stock prices.
i needed to view in IE for these pages.
=)
i think the main draw of firefox is the level of customisation it provides. user-created extentions for users. its safe to say no two firefox will be the same. its not just the functionality... this kind of promotion of individualism attracts a lot of fans.

for some reason pages load really quick w/ ff but not w/ ie even though i have a cable
however, ff pisses me off sometimes because it will delete my new user profile and revert to a profile from long ago. then i have to redo all my info entering and favs etc.

ff displays a cached version of the page, whereas ie sometimes re-requests the page based on some rule.
the tradeoff is that you may not be seeing an updated version of the page in ff and have to manually refresh.
if ff is taking a long time to load, it may be your software firewall blocking it.
it took me a few days to figure that out.
panasonic, i am sure there is an extension for your profile problem.
i dont have that problem cos i only use ff at home and the computer is used by me only.

You're quite right. The Download Counter is currently at 169 million. This does not include updates, mirrors, CVS, or distro redistributions. Most estimates put the browser at ~10% of total market share, I've seen some sites post upwards of 50% (admittedly, they're generally tech orientated). Mind you, this is ignoring the the two page spread that was purchased in the NYT. Or the countless articles about it. So spare me the ad hominem attacks.Daedelus wrote:1 million downloads doesn't mean mainstream. Assume, if you will, each download was from a unique person. What have you proven? Absolutely nothing. WRT Filterset.G, I haven't needed it. One of the rules for Adblock Plus blocks 99% of the ads (the other few rules get the rest) and the ones that still make it through I can't watch anyway since I don't have Flash. Speaking of Flash, I know Flash 7 had a memory leak in it when used in Firefox.
The other extensions I use are DOM Inspector, Web Developer, Live HTTP Headers, All-in-One Gestures, and Tab Mix Plus. First three of very useful for coding web sites.
