Well, 11 and 12 are the annoying sidekicks, and probably meant to be that way. Although Kishiro never previously had any need for characters like that, maybe someone told him his stories needed some humour (should I add, for the stupid part of the audience?).
Whatever, I think their influence war marginal so far.

Wow, a nice, long and intelligent discussion thread about Alita... awesome!
I've been a fan for years, the anime being one of the first fansubtitled anime I'd ever seen back in the early 90's (when we had to trade and dub VHS, you kids today should have nightmares of such things, I tell you). When I found the manga, I also found one of the most inspiring and influential artists I've ever known.
One of the things that interests me most about Kishiro's artwork is his gradual transition from traditional techniques to what I suspect are competely digital methods. I've long suspected that he used Comic Studio software, which shows the versatility and capabilities of that program of nicely, but there's plenty of moments when he utilizes 3D models as well. One of the things I love best is how well he does it, though, it's nearly seamless in many cases, unlike the work of Shirow's Ghost in the Shell: MMI for instance. He also uses digital and 3D tools to great purpose in creating burst, blur and subjective motion effects, and I think that, along with Ogure Ito, he's probably one of the best in the industry and depicting those effects... I'd give up a nut to stand over his shoulder for a year.
Alita, along with Berserk, Air Gear and Tenjho Tenge, are about the only manga that I will actively purchase in the raw just so I can pour over the pages and soak up the art.
At any rate, I have a visual idea of what happens to 11 and 12... It's all pretty squirrely in the next ZOTT fight, though. I won't spoil anything, but could someone remind me... do they have chips for brains?

*grin* Still happens today, I have the first 2 seasons of Ranma on SLP (8 hour) VHS. Yeah, the first 2 hours is 4~5 gen quality, love the bleeding colors. Same for a lot of OLD anime I have. 2nd worse to that would be the real-media formated anime.inkthinker wrote:I've been a fan for years, the anime being one of the first fansubtitled anime I'd ever seen back in the early 90's (when we had to trade and dub VHS, you kids today should have nightmares of such things, I tell you).
As for Alita, I was introduced to that on a 2nd gen VHS tape passed around back in public school. It got me hooked on the manga, great stuff.

Do you read japanese, or did you peak at the raw? Cause I did (stupid I know), but it doesn't tell much really without text.
11 and 12 are not that bad and could be more than sidekicks (the bunny gear sucked though), there's Seck's little doll too (gotta love that one, reminiscent of a certain elf tagging with a badass attitude dude carrying a huge blade...). I actually find this little thing hilarious.
And I fing Sech's development pretty interesting, and his fights are not lame, I mean he thoroughly destruct whoever cross his path. Alita's fight against Sachumodo, now that was kinda lame.

i really think that sechs turning into a guy was perfect. it was really natural and fit well. its not like sechs was that feminine to begin with. sechs became his/her own person, and therefore felt like a guy's body fit him/her better. sechs always looks kick ass though, no matter the gender.Ruuppa wrote: And why'd he have to make Sechs a guy?!
yes, i too actually have many MANY vhs anime, most of which, i found out were bootleg. the 90's were scary. so much bootleg anime u could fill a ship and neon...neon everywhere. T-T

Yeah, sadly the raws are where I must stop as well... no skills with the language, and no-one out there seems to give Alita any scanlove. Viz is generally only about 6 months behind the tankobon releases with the same volume in English, though.
Have you seen the tanks of Alita? Much nicer than most that I see, larger and printed on better stock. Now if I could just find someone out there who's releasing rawscans of the current chapters...
Oh well, so it goes.
I don't mind Sechs becoming a guy so much, except that now I have this constant underlying paranoia that he's going to try and seduce Alita. It's not logical, it's not sensible, it's probably not going to happen, but just the same.... paranoia.

Sechs x Alita.. That would be somewhat like incest, wouldn't it?
It saddens me incredibly that it's so hard to get LO anywhere on the net.. Except raws. Someone, pick this up!! *hint* *hint*
90's was the time of VHS and the occasional Dark Horse manga that drifted over to the harbor. Now we have publishers popping up like mushrooms in rain. In the past year, 3 new finnish publishers have started translating mangas here..

Oohhh, it's very wrong... and that's never stopped Kishiro.
I'm not saying she'd reciprocate, but I could see Sechs's obsession with Alita going in that area.
If not Alita, what about Sechs x 11 & 12? How creepy is that?
I don't even know where to get raws... the latest bit I've read is tank 7. That only goes to 43.
Don't matter hugely though, 'cause I can't read none of it nohow.

(i get my raws from japan, btw)

Good thing: James Cameron is a decent director, unlike most Hollywood directors.
Bad thing: Anime/manga series made into a movie. In Hollywood.
