When I look at SC4 I get this feeling that I'm watching a Cinemax softcore porno. This game is made of cheese.

I just finished watching the MK vs. DC fight with Sub Zero and Superman and I think it gave me hemorrhoids.

I'd take cheese over hemorrhoids every day.

Oh, shit, SC4 will come out in 3 days... Guess I won't be getting the headset after all.

Anyone get SC4? I was gonna get it, but my limited funds and the not so great reviews are making me think twice. Single player has been chopped off and 2 player is very limited. The only good things I've heard so far are the online mode and the character creation mode, but even that has it's problems, so I don't know what to think.

I got to play a little bit of SC4 (About 20 matches) on my buddy's PS3 version. I talked to one of the guys he works with at gamestop and he said that the 360 version had "lag" during normal play. Now I assume he got his terms mixed up and meant to say "slowdown", which isn't nearly as big of a deal, but correct me if I'm wrong.

We just played standard versus, so my impressions are only on that. People have claimed the pace seems slower than previous Soul Caliburs, but I didn't notice anything. Neither of us bothered to look up how to do these "Final Attacks" or whatever they're called, but if I recall only in a few matches did all of one of our armors come off completly (As in all 3 pieces) and make that an opportunity (However we didn't really play any characters too seriously except for our "mains" match of Siegfried vs Cervantes. Long live the Dread Pirate! :D ). In a given 3 round match, your likely to have 2 pieces of armor broken if your about equal with your opponent, 3 if he's whipping up on you.

Looks and sounds are purty, but that's pretty much a given with his HD TV. I played a few of the characters, and I can give you some ideas of changes to them.

Cervantes: Like the transition from 2 t o 3, Cervantes' changes are almost nonexistent except for maybe a few new moves. I did notice though that certain properties of his moves had changed. His generic launcher (Down-Forward+B) doesn't juggle into Storm Generator (B, then Down) unless you hold the back button just after the launcher ( Minor inconvenience). I also noticed that Killer X ([A+B]+Down) doesn't bounce enemies on Counter, it puts them in a crumple stun, which makes my personal favorite follow-up of Flying Dutchman ([A+B]+Down While Crouching) a bit tougher on smaller opponents like Amy or Talim.

Astaroth: I am in no way a great Astaroth player, but almost everything I ever used in his arsenal is either taken out or changed to something I don't know. The biggest hit for me is his Posiedon Tide Rush (QCB+A), which seems to no longer have the massive damaging attack throw added to it anymore. It could be a separate input on contact, but that would only make it suck slightly less. Also, I couldn't seem to get his ground throws to work ([B+K]+ Down-Forward) with a downed opponent). Without his throws it doesn't even seem worthwhile to play him. There is one more combo I used in SC3 that I didn't try yet, his Sidesteping B (Where he launches the foe a ridiculous height in the air) with back held to keep him close to Asty, then QFC+[B+G] for a massive 100ish damage.

Vader: I could not get my head around Vader at all. He seems like the kind of character that should have great normals and basic moves without much fanciness, but his normals don't seem to do much damage and I couldn't seem to get his Force powers to do anything (Although I did only play like 2 matches with him and my buddy wasn't doing me any favors my by choosing a character he was good at and mopping the floor with me those rounds). I heard Vader was cool, but not nearly as dominant as the Apprentice, who my friend had yet to unlock. One kickass thing, his B+G throw is reminicent of Return of the Jedi: He picks up his oppenent and tosses them like the Emporer in the End of RotJ.

Tira: I never actually played her, but my friend did and she seems to have two different stances, a "Good" and an "Evil" stance (There's a flash of light around her when switching to one and a flash of darkness around her when switching to the other)

Most of the other characters I played as (Misturugi, Yoshimitsu, Siegfried) seemed pretty much the same as their SC3 versions, with the exceptions of Ivy and Lizardman. I played a bit of Lizardman in 3 and they changed up his stances, so I'll have to learn him all over again. I wanted Ivy to play more like she did in 2 than in 3, and sometimes she seemed to in the one match I played with her and other times she didn't, so I will need more time in practice to get a final verdict.

The bonus characters are all justpalate swaps of other characters. The gothic robot with mesh dress is an Astaroth clone, the chick with Nipple spikes is a Seuong-Mina clone, the Elf is either Raph or Amy (Niether of us played her but the pattern was clear by then) and the samurai chick with dual swords was a Cervantes swap (So now I can play like Cervy, but with BEWBS!) I know there is another girl with a steel bat, I can't say for sure if she's a swap or not.

It's Soul Calibur. If you enjoyed the series, I haven't seen anything about the VERSUS play that would make me recommend against it, but remember that's all I played. I don't know if they have a shitty psuedo tactics game like they did in 3 to unlock crap.

Ok, I got it and my first impression of the single player mode is that it was severely cut and a big step back from SCIII. Story mode consists of 5 battles (some of which have you fighting more than one character) and one single video for the ending. No cutscenes with certain characters or anything either, it really feels like Arcade Mode where the characters don't interact with each other outside of the taunt at the start of the fight. I mean, in SCIII you had 2 endings, a lot of small generic cutscenes, it would let you chose your opponents (if you knew where each choice would get you), and you had at least one Destined Battle where you have a little unique cutscene with your opponent. i wouldn't have minded the change if they had at least made more cutscenes, considering how easy to make they are, they really have no excuse.

So all I got about Siegfried's story is the initial text story about how he's seeking redemption and the end where he attains redemption. Great story, shit!

That said, online is awesome. There's a small delay you have to get used to, but once you do, you stop noticing it. Sometimes you do get lag, your character does attacks you made half an hour ago, but that little problem didn't persist for too long. I suppose it happens if someone's hammering on your bandwidth (two people were using the wireless signal when I experienced lag, so I blame them). Here's an advice, don't play Special matches where your created character's armor affects their stats if you haven't tried that mode well enough to make strong characters, otherwise you will get your ass handed to you by a character with twice your life bar and deals twice the damage as you do.

Oh, and about the critical finisher, you don't need to destroy their armor, all you need to do is attack constantly until you break his guard (if you do constant heavy attacks the opponent's life bar will flash red and then their guard will brake) and press L1 (or all the face buttons at once) and you'll kill them with a very cool finisher. It's a heavy price to pay for blocking all the time, but you can recover from it very easily as well, so it won't happen so often. Although it never misses and there's no stopping it if they break your guard, all you can do is wish that they didn't press L1 or that he continued a combo and missed his opportunity.

The fights themselves become a lot more interesting than before, but the extras or other modes of gameplay seem lacking at the moment. Anyway, I have yet to try everything, so I'm gonna save my critique for later, these are just my initial impressions.

PS: And I'm gonna make Guts eventually, just let me get more clothing articles.

War Machine wrote:PS: And I'm gonna make Guts eventually, just let me get more clothing articles.
I already have Guts (Siegfried style), Judeau (Taki style) and Caska (Xianghua style) :D

Anyway I think all the fighters got nice and meaningful moves upgrades. At least Taki which I always was best at, and Cervantes. Taki has the new Hover "stance" which really adds a lot of surprise and tactic, Cervantes got some new slashes and a few more spinning-cannonball-moves, Siegfried has a new stance too. Plus Vader and the Apprentice are awesome in my book. Shame that you cannot give them any other equipment or use their style of your own characters (damn SW license, or maybe you have to unlock them first somewhere?).

P.S. The lacking modes: I read that for multiplayer versus, there's only the normal and special variation. Nomore group battles, or the new switch-around groupbattles as shown in story mode. That's damn sad. I always loved battleing 8vs8 with a buddy.

I've got SC4, ive not played any previous SC games really and im kinda finding it hard to pick someone i like and get into it. ive done all the story modes for everyone and made the mistake of playing as random online without knowing any real moves for anyone while not button bashing to try and learn it a little (im like 2:18 or something).

it does look like its taking a shift to DOA "style" females which is a lamentably effective marketing choice and does make it harder for me to take any of the female characters seriously, although what you can do with the customisation is awesome. playing online (PS3) you need 4 bars of lag or else its just whoever has the best spam attack move wins. The quick matching system is very effective since i dont like speaking to people i dont know in online games, but as someone said above it sucks how you can only really do standard matches against friends and also cant talk to them while you play or are in the pregame lobby type thing either.

Was a pack released with extra stuff for it on the US PSNstore? EU only gets half arsed shit i need to figure out how to sign up for the US one.

I'm really loving the character creation thing you know? I've made the Hawk of light, which warmachine has seen(I think? Fuzzy memory)Oprah, Vegeta, The pmb squad, Frank jeager, The hulk etc... My favorite character to use though is the apprentice, but anyone with knowledge of soul calibur could use him with ease.

The fights themselves feel like the most improved area in the game, I've had less trouble dealing with people who use the same attacks over and over, and the critical finisher really adds another way to win a fight even if you're at a disadvantage. Story mode is a piece of shit, Tower of Lost Souls mode is the equivalent of the mission mode in SC1, but it's now a tower and you often advance by 3 floors at a time. For each floor you traverse, you have to do something extra to receive a hidden treasure like ring out everyone in that floor, or finish the fight without guarding, which are sometimes fun to do, it adds an extra challenge to each floor. My only gripe with this is that there's no retry option, if you're supposed to ring out everyone to get the hidden treasure and one person died, you have to either kill yourself which takes a while or quit all the way to the main menu (meaning that you have to got back to ToLS mode, choose the floors you want to repeat, select your characters, and finally you get to retry). Also, even if you have completed ToLS mode, you can't play individual floors, you have to beat the whole group, so if I want to get a treasure on the last floor of a group of 4 floors, I have to beat the other 3 floors before you get a chance to try at the last one.

It really bothers me though, that all the treasures in ToLS mode are not necessary, they're simply clothing articles and you can just buy them instead of having to clear the challenge. If you've already bought the article and you complete the hidden treasure challenge where you could've gotten the article for free, you'll instead get some gold, nothing more. This game's saving grace lies in the online and the character creation mode, if it weren't for those I would've returned the game. Overall, this game is more of an 8/10. Mostly because of the replay value, even if the initial play value isn't that great.

Yeah the character editor is awesome. I've played with my Judeau vs. Warmachine's Guts, but before I could kick his ass my connection dropped 8)

And Warmachine, I agree, ToLS is pretty much obsolete. The only thing you really only get through it are (I think) 2 sets of armor you only get from fighting down there through the 40 stages.

Singleplayer modes in previous SCs were much better IMHO, because they had some RPG elements in there.

It's a new game but it's a budget game.

It'll probably cost 40 but I'm hoping for 30.

I'm buying it for Guy alone but Makoto, Dudley and Ibuki are pretty much locks at this point.

Can't wait.

Yeah, at least it's a budget game. $30 would be nice. I probably wouldn't buy another SFIV game right now, but when I saw that they added new characters, like the ones you named, well I might just get it after all.

It'll most definitely be sold at $40.

After having shelved SFIV so quickly, I don't think I'm gonna buy the next one so early, maybe later when it price goes below $30.

Yeah, I'm maining Tekken 6 right now for Final Round XIII... Lars, Miguel, and Yoshimitsu are my mains.

I'm really excited for SSFIV mainly because of Makoto. She was my main in 3S and I can't wait to see what they've done to her in the game... Hell I don't even care if she's D-tier I'll still main her. I'm also really looking forward to team play.

Now the only fighting game that I'm REALLY wanting to see is VF5 R.... But I doubt Sega will even attempt to release that bad ass game.

20 Ultras.
