That episode was definitely my most favorite one. Seeing Spike tripping out on the stairs always cracks me up!

Image Here's my new avatar. I'm rewatching Gundam X, which is a bit of a task because the whole thing is subtitled. It's really the only thing I own that just subs. I watch subs if its a really good movie or series that was never dubbed, but I prefer dubs because they allow me to get into the plot better. Plus in shows like Desert Punk and Berserk the dub voices match the characters better imo.

What language are you listening to anime in? The Japanese voices are almost always better than the ones in English, not only are the Japanese voices more appropriate for the characters, but the quality of the voice acting is just better overall. I can't stand most dubs, subs are totally the way to go man.

Oh Starnum, you poor deluded fairy king. You obviously haven't witnessed the magnificent dubbing in Mega Man 8. Check it out and you will see exactly how big the difference is when you dub!

This is always up to debate, and 80% of the time I agree. But Guts English is so much superior to his Japanese. And cmon, Goku is played by a chick in Japanese, that's worse than him being played by a white guy in the movie (though since he's an alien I guess it doesn't really matter, for the movie I mean). And I find a lot of Japanese girls are so whiny and annoying, give me a headache. Though, Bleach sucks in English. Naruto is kinda 50/50 for that though, imo.

Yeah, it's a matter of opinion, and here's mine. Berserk is better in Japanese, period. The Japanese Gatts is way better, IMO, but that's me. Okay, I'll give you DBZ. I think that both casts have their pros and cons. The problem with Goku in the live-action movie is that the actor is a scrawny little emo boy who looks nothing like Goku. I think that the Japanese voices sound way more realistic in anime in general. The intonations used are almost always spot on. It sounds like real people talking and expressing themselves in Japanese. The Japanese take voice-acting very seriously it seems, it's much more like our acting in America. Whereas in America voice-acting isn't taken nearly as seriously, and the direction is usually lousy and half-assed, IMO. I think the girls sounds awesome in Japanese. I like the cute sounding voices, and there are some very unique sounding voices as well. Listen to Sarah's voice in Overman King Gainer, she has an amazing sounding realistic girl voice. Bleach and Naruto both make me want to vomit when I hear them in English, especially Naruto. When I first started watching anime I preferred the American voices, just because it was in my own language. I mean who wants to have to read the whole time they're watching something, right? However, after actually listening to everything in Japanese for so long, I've become spoiled on what I consider to be the superior voice-acting. I mean it's only fitting anyway being in it's original soundtrack. It's just a bonus for me at this point that fansubs usually come in Japanese with subs. XD

Historically, Japanese voices were better because they hired good voice actors, but the English voice actors they've chosen in recent years have been getting better and better. As it stands today, I don't mind English dubs (for the most part). Cowboy Bebop and Berserk are definitely a couple of animes were I can firmly say they sound great both languages.

I'd say Japanese voices usually sound better than English ones (if only because it's harder to determine when bad acting is taking place when you're listening to a language you don't understand) but having to read subtitles can really pull you out of a scene.

I go on a case by case basis mostly.

Something like Dead Leaves with a million shit going on at once is probably better viewed dubbed.

I have zero problems with the new Akira dub.

Cowboy Bebop can go either way (Vicious sounds better in Japanese though).

Berserk I can only watch in Japanese with subtitles.

Etc, etc, etc.

Right, I agree with you there. I tend to watch things with subs, but if it sounds good in English, then I'll probably listen to it dubbed. Like Cowboy Bebop is just fine in English, that's how I watched it. I mean, I won't go out of my way to find a dub usually, but if I happen across one I'll stick with it as long as it sounds at least okay. Some things are just better in one language or the other, and yes I've seen some anime that actually sound better in English too, but usually it's the other way around. I can tell when the voice acting is bad in Japanese now. I used to not be able to, but I've listened to the language enough at this point that I can usually tell. XD

I completely second that. German dubs in the recent years are most of the time really good now, with fitting voices for the characters, and good and well-known voice actors. And I have to admit, it has a certain appeal when, for example, Roy Mustang talks in the (german) voice of Johnny Depp, or Sousuke Sagara in the (german) voice of Tobey Maguire. Those voice actors don't get picked for famous hollywood actors for nothing, they do know their stuff. Black Lagoon was another one that was dubbed really good, both in german and english, although I prefer the german voices here.

But I just couldn't stand watching more than 1 episode of Full Metal Panic with the german dub no matter how good the voices themselves fitted. Everytime they pronounced "Souske" as "Sosuuuuuuuuke" my ears hurt. I mean WTH? They call him Souske in the english dub perfectly fine. They even call him Souske once in the german dub, where he uses his alias "Sousuke Seagal". IIRC there is a form seen with his alias written on in romaji, clearly spelling out his first name as So(u)suke, but they pronounce it "Souske Seagal", but all the other time they use Sousuuuuuuuuuke.

I frakkin hate stuff like that. They apparently knew how to pronounce the name right but choose not to? "Germanification" of names is not an option. They don't pronounce english names with german pronounciation, so why the hell do it for japanese ones?

Well good for you :). I'm taking Japanese classes over the summer, so if you guys will have me i'll be able to translate in a few months. Kanji's a bitch though. But I'm an exec in the filmsociety at UBC now, which is cool, I get codes and special emails and stuff and I'm charge of their DVD collection. They actually have porn, its funny. The only dvd I've donated is a Berserk DVD I had before I got the 'Season 1' box set came out. It's not got a lot of use ... and my avatar is ramirez from skies of arcadia ... yeah, i know i change it too often.
