Berserk 365 & 366 (The Beginning)

Post by LordMune »

Young Animal is hitting store shelves in Japan as I write this, and it is time.

With Berserk's rebirth, we're taking the opportunity to try out some new things:

* On title pages we'll be (more consistently) rendering the names of the people that make up Studio Gaga in English, to properly credit them.
* You'll also notice that these are "Episodes" 365 and 366 — aligning us with the more official Arc/Chapter/Episode nomenclature used by the publisher to divide up Berserk's storyline. So this release is the Fantasia Arc, Elf Island Chapter, Waning Moon's Quietude and Eye of the Maelstrom Episodes.
* Finally, we're moving on to a new typeface. It has a bit more personality and flexibility, while retaining the familiar feel and all of the readability we know and love from the old standard Wild Words.

Please support Mori Kouji and Studio Gaga in upholding Miura's legacy! Buy the licensed volumes, and consider purchasing current issues of Young Animal directly; either physically from Amazon.jp or digitally from Hakusensha.

I'm excited to see how this climactic encounter unfolds, as well as for the overarching story. I don't mind if the art looks a little off in some ways, it's quite impressive that they're able to get this close to Miura's style in the first place. I imagine a lot of the subtler storytelling elements will be lost, the dialogue, the humor, the intricacies that Miura hadn't yet thought up or told to anyone or that can't be remembered, those'll be the things that I'll miss the most for the future of Berserk. But that's how it is, and I'm happy that we're getting at least a conclusion.

And thanks EG for the scanlations. I probably haven't said that since I joined, but since I barely do anything anymore, I oughta thank the people who bring forth the goods. It looks beautiful and balanced, and the translations always read well and convey a lot without being overly verbose or dry.

Oh and does anyone know when the next episode of Berserk airs? I can't find it in my TV guide. It's on the Animal Planet channel right? Maybe Animal Planet Kids or some such? I know it was something about animals and being young...
But anyways, "episode" makes sense to use, something different from the arc/chapter nomenclature.

The legend continues! It may not be as near perfect as the original but it's the next best thing and I for one rejoice on this day. Totally agree with DPP. Thank you so much EG for your continued efforts to bring this masterpiece to us unworthy masses.

Glad to see it back. It won't be the same but I will continue to read this story to its end.

It's been a long time since I've posted here. With Berserk's release schedule being so inconsistent, I have been in the habit of letting as much as a year or two's worth pile up so I could binge it all.

When the news came that Miura died, there were four chapters I hadn't read yet. I logged in here, downloaded them onto my hard drive, and sat down, fully intending to read them...

...and I couldn't. Because as soon as I did, I'd be living in a world in which there would never be any new Berserk for me to read. I wasn't ready to live in that world yet. Probably half a dozen times I sat down fully intending to read those last four chapters, and I never did.

I finally did it the other day. If that final Miura chapter had been the last of it, well... as someone who first experienced Berserk through the 1997 anime before a single volume of the manga had been officially released in English and before I knew where to look for scanlations, there would be something fitting about once again ending things on a cliffhanger. I could have lived with that.

I'm glad I don't have to. I'm glad that Mori Kouji and Studio Gaga are continuing Miura's work. I only know Mr. Miura through his work, so it may be presumptuous of me to speak about what he would have wanted, but I like to think it's what he would have wanted. It seems like they are approaching it with the right attitude of humility. I like that they let a year go by before doing this, to let things breath a little. Even if I ultimately wind up thinking that their chapters are not as good, even if I wind up thinking they're a garbage fire, I would rather they try and fail to live up to Miura's legacy than not try at all.

I read 365 and 366 just now. Obviously only time will tell to what extent their work lives up to Miura's legacy, and in some ways we'll never know, because we'll never know what his version would have been like if he had lived.

But it's certainly not a garbage fire.

Thank you, as always, to everyone at Evil Genius for continuing to bring us such an excellent translation of this story that means so much to me.
