I think it's more an oversight on the author's part. A lot of shit was happening all at once during the destruction of Konoha, so it might be easy to overlook the 5 odd pages of Hinata confessing her undying love to Naruto.

Whenever a bankai was revealed, it suited the user to a certain degree. But Soifon's bankai seems like it was pulled out of the mangaka's ass for the sake of her having one. I sadly agree, nothing as neat as the main character becoming a big player in their world ever happens. In the end, she's still a single influence in the independent world around her.

Clare becoming an Abyssal will hopefully give us an insight on how the world is viewed by Abyssals, or if her sense of value will change at all.
