The plot isn't outstanding, but at least is ain't as brain-dead as Dragon Ball Z. It's just panned out over a lot more episodes than your typical anime. Try marathoning the show and you'll see it come together. I don't think the plot is planned out at all. It's like Inuyasha (god I hate that show) ...

Okay...watched first 20 eps and I'm still not feeling the show. The humor seems a little on the stupid side. Just not my show or should I keep going?

I just laugh though every time I go to the bookstore and see that Berserk is the only manga there that is wrapped up so certain people (like lil kids) cant preview it.
