indeed, i for instance, usually read it where it get translated first (usually an spanish translator btw), and then, come here and read it again with great quality.
I am a native spanish speaker, however, i like a lot better the work here at Evil_genius keep it up!

Still not a fan of this arc, especially if it involves these stupid pirates, but thanks for a flawless translation, as always !
Is it just me or are the creepy crawlers of the sea-god stomac really not used at all ? They appear 5s on the last chapter and are already gone… If the author does not care for them, just get to the heart and get it over with, for christ sake… I long for the time when even a midboss in Berserk had a meaning and a story.

@Kain I can agree with you on that. It seems as though Miura isn’t trimming the fat on this arc like he has some of the others. I don’t hate it, but it is definitely weaker than the rest. I would have much preferred seeing Guts cut down the entire pirate crew and then gut the Sea God from the inside within a couple chapters, without spending time fighting giant bugs.
But oh well. Berserk is Berserk and I still love it.

@ smokeesid There’s nothing nice about denoising mangas and just cause all the speed-scanlators use it doesn’t make it better.

A small amount could be beneficial (I mean a really small amount) but that small an amount can be accomplished about the same with PS’s reduce noise filter. And we do use that sometimes, but only very limited. You see essentially what those things do is blur the page, though with a slightly different ‘pattern’. Anyways point is, detail is lost, and with a manga as detailed as Berserk, it’s better to have something closer to what Miura actually drew rather than something that looks shiny and smooth.

I was cleaning some pages of Berserk 320 and 321 so noticed a nice change when I used topaz clean. Denoise has very little effect and we can’t use it more because it will remove the details but clean was good to counter the disturbance(that’s what I believe there are) caused while scanning the manga (I mean through scanner). It only superficially looks better, some people like that, I think it looks like shit. Miura’s artwork is incredibly detailed, and that amount of topaz filter is smoothing out lines that are supposed to have more detail. It also gives the more detailed textures an ugly look.
Anyways the problems are due to the bad paper quality and cheap ink usage in magazine publications, not the scanning.

There’s a simple reason we don’t use denoise filters: they completely change the artwork. What you want to do when scanlating a manga is make the digital representation of the printed image as close to the original as possible. With filtering all you get is a uniform looking, gooey mass that looks nothing like the printed patterns on paper. I for one am willing to turn a blind eye to the very, very slight disturbances caused by cheap materials (when the editor is half decent) if it means that the result actually looks like the original.

And I’d venture to say that no, it doesn’t even superficially look better. Also, this goes for every artist, not just Miura.

Well I guess what I meant was that with Miura’s level of detail, you can’t get away with as much denoising as you could with a simpler manga. And what I meant by superficially better was the appeal of looking at something with less jagged edges, without really interpreting what you’re looking at.

On another note, I was a little bit surprised to see no mention of the Anime Project… As far as we know, the first movie is expected in early summer which is pretty close now.
Hopefully, we’ll get something with the next chapter.
In this case, I just hope that no news is good news!

Thanks again for your continued and amazing work on Berserk. Two things to say, I agree this arc is weaker, but since its got more Guts in it than the last arc I’m happy none the less.
I also agree that adding any filter that actually modifies the patterns of the original image would be doing Berserk a huge disservice. Too much cleaning, and especially noise reducing filters really would muddy up the quality. In Miura’s case especially because he uses so many short, sharp lines of detail that would definitely be lost to the blur of a noise filter, even a really slight one. So yea, usually don’t yammer on this much, ending now.

I hope we can get to elf helm and off this freaking Island before another break arrives. This part of the story is starting to drag on it seems. I hope Miura’s not stuck and thinking how to get them to elf helm, because if so we might on this freaking Island until next year this time.
Just venting, but I sure do hope he moves on quickly.

It’s not a second season, but a whole new thing. It is starting with one movie, supposedly to be released summer of 2011. After that it’s unknown if it’ll continue with movies or start a TV series or OAVs.
